non usa dizzy, 78 2f, coil compatibility?

hey, I have searched and didn't find an answer so here goes
I have a 78 40

I have a non usa dizzy, which is basically a E-68 vaccum advance
with a ballast resistor wired in on the + side of the coil to a switched black with yellow trace 16ga or 18ga wire


1: which coil should I use? the one listed for the 78 or the one for the 68? I would think the one for the 68, why are they different?

2: can I wire the + side of the coil directly to the "pink yazaki resistor ignition wire" I have read about from Jim C, or do I need to keep the external ballast resistor and wire it to the heavy gauge black with yellow trace switched wire?


3: all the coils are painted, how are they getting grounded? is there a good way to do an external ground?

4: is there any negative issue with heat, of mounting the coil to the side of the head?

Not the big expert, but I'm running a SOR non USA dizzy on my '76 2f. I'm running it through the resistor and using the '76 coil with the ignitor removed and wired just like the early ones. Works well. As far as heat is concerned, the early engines had the coil on the head, but later they went to the fender. IMHO, coils don't seem to like heat.

I would mount the coil on the fire wall or the fender ,no grounding wire needed.
 
1. The coils should be equivalent. Your choice.
2. If you have a resistor wire, you don't need the external resistor.
3. Coil cases don't need a ground. Only the - side of the coil gets grounded by the distributor/ignitor.
4. Probably not, since this is a stock location.

1: Advance lists 2 different coils for the different years, 2 different prices, the older is more, but

2: that is what I was thinking, is there an actual resistor mounted somewhere in the wiring harness?
3: huh, I always thought they needed to be grounded thru the case, good to know otherwise
4: good, that will free up the inner-fender to set tools, or mount a compressor/toolbox
 
The external resistor is a metal box usually attached to the coil bracket. It is about half the size of a pack of cigarettes.
 
yea I got that, but I was thinking, if there is a resistor wire it might have a resistor further up line,,,

I have (separate from this situation, on the shelf) a coil/ignitor block that seems to have a resistor, an ignitor, and something else on the side,,,,
