Ok, so my 2000 LX470 is not wanting to start at all. I had intermittent starting problems on 2 or 3 occasions but I would take the key out or turn ignition off and start again a few times and it would eventually start. I now turn the key, all the dashboard lights come on, as before, and then when I want to start there’s nothing, no cranking.these were the same symptoms as before, just that it would eventually start. How can I fix this on my own? What troubleshooting steps should I take. If someone can let me know I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks

sounds like the immobilizer problem.

When you put the key in does the red security light go out. On the 2000 lc its right under the radio. Should be a blinking light and should turn off as soon as the key is inserted. If it does not search immobilizer and find your answers.

my other suggestion would be try a different key

On the intermittent times was it cranking and now it's not?
It wasn't cranking but I would try a few times and eventually it would crank and start. Also, when I try to crank, the radio lights and the ac consolo lights go out as I put it in the start mode, they come back up when I revert to the on position.

The immobilizer red security key goes out once I put the key in, the steering wheel comes out as usual and the lights on the dash turn on.

When I had this same symptom it was a bad alternator

Sounds like a starter...and it isn't easy to get too...under the intake manifold...see my other thread about having a starter changed...IT DID NOT work out too well for me...other than getting a newer LC. I am firmly in the camp that my mechanic dropped something in the intake manifold...

Have someone listen for the starting solenoid (drivers side under the hood), if it is clicking, you more than likely have a bad starter, or bad starter contacts...

1999 LX470 No Crank

If that is the case...MANUALLY TURN THE MOTOR OVER BEFORE YOU CRANK IT AGAIN...Here is why...

you might look at your primary cable connections between battery posts & GND / starter. start with the + terminal on the battery & wire brush together with the inside surface of the clamp. I use bearing grease to protect it from humidity corrosion

also FWIW corrosion accumulates more readily between the + battery post and its clamp... when starting, there's sufficient current to spark-gap the corrosion & get the starter to turn so everything seems fine yet the corrosion inhibits recharging eventually leading to a drained battery. your symptoms may be related to an under-voltage battery

1. Bad battery connections.
2. Bad starter, although you typically get more warning before complete failure. Also, I don’t recall my dash lights going out when turning the key to Start position. This definitely happened when I had #1.
3. Other.

Thank you all. These are great pointers to start looking into it. I really appreciate it. I will keep you posted on what I find and I welcome other tips if something wasn’t mentioned.

Bad battery?

on the 60-62, that is a coil ground issue. do you have coil packs and separate ignitors?

The 100 series has individual coils for each spark plug...

Back to the OPs issue...it would NOT turn over, correct?

Yes, I cleaned the battery terminals which had some corrosion and tested the battery which shows as good. Tomorrow I get an multimeter and will test the starter relay. I can’t really hear clicking when I turn the key. Just won’t do anything when I turn it to start.

Update: I had my wife try and start the car while I listened what happened under the hood. The gas pump comes on it seems since there is a noise as the key is placed in the on position. When she attempted to start it the only clicking is an initial click not too loud that comes on from the driver side fuse box I believe. No other clicking is heard. The battery was tested and it shows good voltage. When the key is turned to the start position the lights go out on the radio and ac unit consoles.
I will have to check the starter relay and fuse tomorrow. How can I check to see if the starter is bad without taking it out?
