I replaced the coil, and points. Cap and rotor are newer and still good from what I can see.

I rewired exactly as it was prior to install of new parts. Have power at coil "+" side. Power at top side of resistor, bottom side of resistor, power at points.

I can not produce a spark at all. Have adjusted the points more times than I can count.

What gives? Am I over looking the obvious? See pic below for what I am looking at.

The wire to the points should be on the neg side of the coil.

here's the way it works 12vdc flows into pos side of coil and out neg side of coil--this is the primary windings, the points open and the voltage dropping suddenly causes a spike in volatge to occur in the secondary windings which is a completely seperate set of wires. This is induced voltage and is what goes through the coils wire to the distributor to give you spark.

you've got 12 volts going to the points cause there is 12v supply wire on the pos side of the coil but the coil cant work that way, there's no trigger for the induction to take place.


Also I would not be running my fuel pump off the coil and not sure what the wire going to the carb is.

I'm not an expert on FJs but typical point ign is one wire to hot side from solenoid start terminal (applies full 12 v to coil plus side with key in start pos). Another that gives 12 volts but runs through a ballast resistor or resistance wire from the IGN when the key is released from start pos. The ballast resistor cuts down the 12 volts to save wear and tear on the points.


looks like you have a ballast resistor between the points and the distrib which means you will not have a full 12volts during starting

you could have 2 wires to the hot side ---one 12v from start term on sol and another from ign terminal with the ballast resistor in-line.

This will give you better cold start performance.

Check the ground on your starter. my cruiser wouldn't start this morning, but after scrubbing the starter ground she fired right up.

It will never fire up with the points wire on the pos side of the coil though;p
