Installed them today in the hot 95F weather in So Cal :o What do you think? Is these better than the Snorkel? and for those who live in CA, Am i gonna have problem later on when i do the SMOG check? No CARB approved (label) and its JDM kit.

Looks sharp!

I think a airbox to isolate the intake from the engine heat would give you the most performance improvement. Especially in gridlocked California traffic.

Is there a shield or screen to keep bugs out of your pretty pink filter?

Nice. Can you post a pic of the hood from further out so we can get the whole picture?

I agree with NMuz that if you want the real benefit from a cold air setup... you need to box it in. That isn't doing much to bring in the cold air.

To answer your question regarding whether or not this is better than a snorkel (I'm assuming you mean for HP rather than deep water crossing). Who knows, I would think the snorkel is still better when it comes to feeding the engine cooler air, but it wouldn't look right on your rig.

Do like others said and find a way to isolate/insulate the air intake tube from the engine heat, especially since the exhaust is on that side of the engine.

Lookin good!

P.S. When are you going to slap the Garrett(s) on it? Maybe you can help me when I decide to put a T06 on my Mazda :D

lookin good:cheers: is this another one of your in your face jdm mods that non of us can get our hands on? :grinpimp: Any noticable gains performance/mileagewise or just that sexy whistle/blow-off valve sound you noted

I like the scoop! Another vote for a further away shot..

If you installed the second battery tray and put in a longer air tube, you could put that filter in there where the second battery goes to be isolated from the engine. But you'd have to route the intake from the scoop too, though maybe some type of p-trap is in order anyway in case you find yourself in some heavy rain. Just a thought..

LX,
You should find some kind of diverter, as the others said rain (altho rare here) will be an issue. More underhood dirt and debris will also be a bigger issue.

If the diverter routed a J or U shape to feed air to the filter from the side or bottom, it would help alot.

Also, I think the stock feeds cooler air b/c it takes it from the well instead of engine bay. If you box in, as others said, it will help. Maybe you can modify a Volant air intake box to fit your needs.

I think you should check on volume, b/c one of the first things I noticed w/ I got the 80 is how massive the airbox & filter was. The OEM filter def has more surface area than the pink one you have, maybe a drop-in would work just as well?

man, 95? I think it was 103 here today! whew!

Way to have the balls to hack your hood. Many talk but few will cut

I seriously doubt air taken from under the hood is any hotter than the factory air box-yea the oe air box supposedly is a "cold air" but look at the design--air is pulled from within that hot fender and spins around inside the round metal filter housing that is sitting next to the exhaust manifold-there is nothing "cold" about this system. The oe filter assembly is as good as can be had for cleaning the air but thats about all it is good for. I like the idea of putting venting in the hood but I would do so more to let hot air out as opposed to letting cool air in. I too am pulling hot air from under the hood right now but am looking for a solution.

did you experience MAF failure as a result of an oiled filter?

Yup. Didn't take long either. Year and .5 and I was really carefull to under oil the filter. The MAF was so filthy it couldn't be salvaged. This was on my 2000 4Runner. I have one on my Son's 91 FJ80 and it is comming off as soon as we get it out of storage. Different air flow sensor but I don't like the idea of that oil in the intake to attract dirt.

thanks for the scare friend. I know there are oilless cone filters-I think AEM makes them. This may be a good option

Sorry dusty. I read all sorts of stuff on this forum over the last couple years and called B.S. to the oil filter scare tactics till it happened to me! I don't need the extra 2 HP it gives me. Not trying to scare you just listing my limmited experience.

Did anybody notice his oil cap?

I wonder if he carries an oven mitt with him so he can open it when the engine is hot.....;)

Saw it - just part of his 'bling' factor. :D

Just think about grabbing onto a 200 degree aluminum billet to un-screw it...

Cold - sure, no problem - in need of a fast quart, not a chance w/o some very good hot pad/gloves. :flipoff2:
