ok guys, I decided to test the 62's top speed on a straight and very flat highway last night.

Noone was around so I felt it was safe enough for me to do it, only taking myself into the risk.

I floored it, got to 90,

Backed off the throttle to slow down than the torque converter locked up, it shifted into over drive (I guess it wouldnt shift into 4th with it floored) and it started accelerating. I let it go for a while, got to an indicated 110mph Speedo was pegged and I slowed down from there.

I was spinning 3800 rpm and it felt like it had more left in it.
at 90 mph it shook bad, at 100 it stoped shaking and was very stable, 110 was not reached long enough for me to comment but it seemed stable.

Stock engine, 33x9.5's stock tranny, 216k miles

I know I was slower than 110, it didnt seem like it was that fast, but the speedo claimed it.

110 is starting to get sketchy in a Subaru Outback Sport (basically the same suspension as a WRX if I remember correctly). There's no way I'm coming anywhere near it in a 60.

AT 115 you could might sell it for interior parts if the blow up and insuing roll over didn't cause a fire that ruined the interior too.

at an indicated 110, with larger diameter than stock tires you'd be going faster than 110.

oh yeah, don't kill yourself imo that's not too bright

I did 63 yesturday, I thought that was pretty fast in my geared down 60:D

I was nervous at 120mph in BMW 330i. It would take a gun to my head to try 110 in my 62. Call me a puss!

that's just crazy, dude..... stock wheels & suspension?

The WReX is stable to WAY over 110.

For the record:
My 62 has been up over 90 a few times on AZ freeways.

Oh, it's stable for sure, but things start happening awfully quickly at those speeds.

potential nominee

For the Darwin Award!

I went 125 in my '98 Mustang Cobra, and regularly over 100 on my motorcycle, but I'm content at ~65-70 in the Bruiser.

(As a side note, I've sold the mustang, and was hit on the motorcycle, so I'm only driving the Bruiser)

I like it :D

Have you been to AZ? We have straight stretches of Highway longer then most states.:bounce2:

I've actually seen the traffic running at 105 between Tucson and Phoenix on rare occasions.

The fastest I've ever seen was an indicated 130 in a turbo eclipse. I'll never do that again. Noway I'd go anywhere near that in a cruiser.

rode in a 350z doing 155 mph in houston

90-130mph in (in a 4-dr Benz) 7PM houston traffic in and out of cars on HWY59

99mph in the fj62

120+mph on the curvy backroads of nacogdoches in my WRX

hit a median perpendicular doing 60mph in a 97 Lincoln Towncar, only bent one rim. the brakes decided they did not want to work.

yeah.

120 in my wifes 97 Audi A6 Quattro, felt like i was doing 80. My dad claims doing 160 in his old 69 Superbee back in the late 70's. My 1973 fj40 has been up to 75 with 33's.

I think i had the 60 over 80 once. Make sure your 33s can handle that sort of thing. Some of them are rated with a much lower top speed.. I used to go 110 mph atleast once a week when I owned the turbo miata... I got places so much faster in that car!

Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok people... I grew up and learned to drive in Germany. As most of you know German Highways (Autobahns) have no speed limit. I have to laugh a bit about this threat, since I drove pretty much all my vehicles above 160km/h (100mph) at the time. Almost every German or Japanese compact car will do 100mph and if you go to Germany you WILL see them actually go this fast. European cars are built for those speeds specifically and the top speed of a vehicle is a big selling point.

My Dad had a 78 Range Rover and he drove it 105-110mph (!) almost every time we drove on the Interstate there. We were so used to it, we didn't even think about it anymore. We had a 85 Land Cruiser Diesel and the top speed was 87mph (You would be surprised how fast even Diesels go if you drive them to the max every day). My Dad sold it because it was too slow for him...
Funny story:
When I visited to Canada 9 years ago, I wasn't aware of the speed limit of 62mph. I rented a car and drove it 100mph basically every day I went on the highway. I got really odd looks from the people I passed :) I finally glued in what I was doing. I live now 8 years in Canada and finally understand how crazy high speed driving is. Every visit to Germany concerns me now especially since you HAVE TO drive at least 90mph on the highway just to go with the flow.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if you can do 110mph with a FJ62, I have seen it done legally in Germany. I don't think you have to be afraid for the (well maintained) vehicle to fall apart. It's all about the driver and if he/she is used to the speeds.

Here some vehicles I had over there and their max speed I actually driven them:

1996 Ford Escort Turbo Diesel: 119 mph
1986 Mitsubishi Colt 1.5 liter: 111mph
1978 Mercedes 200D: 77mph (the slowest vehicle I ever had)
1986 Mitsubishi Galant 1.8liter: 108mph
1987 Mitsubishi Pajero 2.6liter (sold here as Dogde Raider): 100mph
1978 Range Rover: 112mph (was the fastest 4x4 at the time)

But the scariest: Imagine you are going 110mph in a 4x4 and in the rear view mirror you see to high beam headlights of a BMW 740 going 160mph flashing...

Now you can ask me about some accidents I have seen over there. But this is another story...

Herbert
