New (to me) 2023 GX460 rattling like crazy on passenger side interior. What could it be? (2 Viewers)

Hi all, just picked up a 2023 GX460 with 13k miles and like it a lot so far. However, I've noticed an intermittent rattling on the passenger side while going over bumps in the road. I can't quite isolate it myself and I just moved to a new town where I don't yet know anyone so I can't do the "have a friend sit in the backseat as you drive and try to pinpoint the noise" trick. Its honestly annoying enough that I might get a mobile mechanic to come out to check it out. Video below, any idea what it might be?

I think you are probably under factory warranty, so that would be worthwhile to pursue.

It almost sounds like a relay to me, but if its "bumps related" then may want to check out underneath....mud flap area, under running boards where the lights are, and even exhaust shields.

When you say, "...going over bumps.", what kind of bumps and how fast? Slow rolling speed pumps and driveways or cracks, dips and rises on the highway?
Can you make it rattle standing next to the car, with all the doors open (to hear the noise) and shaking/pushing the car sideways? Or bouncing on the rear bumper for fore/aft bouncing?

But as mentioned by iwashmycar, take it into a Lexus dealer and let them futz around with it a little. If nothing else, you'll get a free car wash, so you don't have to be like, iwashmycar! And they'll give you a shinny new Lexus as a loaner to drive around with!

If my rear seats are farthest back it rattles, clicking it up one notch forward and its gone.

Good call, thank you both. I called the closest dealership and they're gonna take a look on Saturday. Unfortunately the rattling is slow bumps, fast bumps, all kinds of bumps really. On the plus side that might help them diagnose and fix it easier.

I did play with the seats and seatbelt - unfortunately no combination worked to stop the rattling.

Thank you all for the suggestions though, hopefully the dealership figures it out

Update: Took it to Lexus of Winter Park. They couldn't pinpoint the rattling so they shoved a bunch of felt in the B pillar which is where they say these problems are 70% of the time. I drove away and it seemed fine... until I hit some bumps and the rattling recommenced. Looks like I'll be going back next weekend

Same problem in 2023 new. Pushing the slider release handles down stops it also.

Check 2nd row grab handle in the headliner. It's clipped in metal to metal and is rather flimsy.

I just took a quick look and it seems fine. Hard to tell though as this rattling only happens with the vehicle in motion.

The noise does sound like it's coming from up high though, so if its not something in the grab handles or the seat belt it might actually be the sunroof. I'll definitely mention the grab handles as a possibility to the tech when I'm back at the dealership.

have the dealer check the C pillar. There is a known issue with the factory welds and hotter climate usage that causes a tap like that in the roof. roughly here. The solution is to pull the headliner and either tack weld the spot or add insulation/foam tape.

If it is above the rear passengers you can push against your headliner and it will stop.

I did a little more digging on other forums and seen updates from people with the same issue on GX550's who said the issue was loose spot welds there and the fix was having the dealership use some type of silicone on that area. I haven't seen anyone with this issue yet in the 460's but I'll keep digging because this really does sound like it might be it.

The fact they mentioned this could be an issue related to hot climates causing the failure is interesting too. I'm in Florida but my GX was in Texas before this, so it makes sense.

Had something similar in a 2008 Cayman S. Over bumps one of the welds ticked. It eventually went away. Dealer was useless.

Another super-annoying, non-Lexus like rattle coming from the back. You could hear it from the rear driver's side seat, but only when you got up to 40+ MPH. Didn't find anything here on 'MUD specifically, but found a thread on CL that explained it, once I finally found the rattle and was looking for a part number.

I tried the usual suspects, top rear shock nut and bushings, spare tire loose, rear upper and lower control arms, KDSS bushings, gas cap, bottle jack, rear door strut (which IS loose and lightly rattles, but you can only hear it when riding in the cargo area), door latch...

Thank you, I'll definitely look those over. As much as these vehicles cost it's a little dismaying to see so many rattle issues... then again I've had another couple of Lexuses and they didn't rattle at all with much higher mileage... I guess you just never know

In all fairness, I beat the s#!t out of mine. Stuff's gonna come loose...

Had a subtle rattle like a lose piece of plastic/screw that sounded like it was coming from inside the center console lid/arm rest assembly. Took it to the dealer under warranty. Turns out it was some pens in the glove box underneath a notebook. I don't have sounds like this in my older Lexus' since they glove boxes and center consoles were lined with felt. Now they are bare plastic inside.

That's funny. Unfortunately mine isn't pens or anything in the center console, its up high on the passenger side. I have another appointment with the Lexus dealership on Saturday, we'll see what they can find
