Looking for suggestions for the next set of tires. 315/70r17 or 35/12.5r17 Requirements are local (Central PA) driving, plus to and from RC and Anthracite year-round. Total annual mileage, 2-4,000.

I care about mud/snow/ice performance. Some tire noise OK. Radial preferred, bias ply ok. There are several obstacles at RC and Anthracite I just can't quite get up presently, but think that more aggressive Mud/Snow tires could make the difference. The current Nitto ATs don't quite make it. It's time to change.

I'm open as to brand. I've used Super Swampers, BFGs, Goodyears, but always ATs, never a Mud/Snow tire. I'm looking at Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs, Toyo Open Country M/T, one of the Super Swampers, Dick Cepak Mud Country, Treadwright (thanks Andy) and am open to anything else.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks

Toyo, bfg mt, good year mt.

I am running 37 x 12.5 x 17 Cooper STT Pro tires, they are very pleasant on the road and are still quite aggressive.

The Coopers are nice but if money is not an object I'd buy the Toyos. having said that i'm quite happy with the 315 BFG all terrains on my 80, and also the Goodyear MTR's on my 40. The Goodyears are a little louder than the BFG and I'd say the Toyos are quieter yet. Vince, you couldn't go wrong with any of those three in my opinion.

I vote cooper stt or the treadwright's that Andy has.
The Goodyear dura tracks and the toyo's are very heavy tires.

I also liked the micky Thompson mtz's

For the ultimate in toughness it's hard to beat a bias tire. But you give up road manners and noise.

If you want snow/ice traction stay away from the BFG KM2s. They have exactly zero siping. I run the Goodyear MTRs with Kevlar in the sidewalls. They have over 50,000 road miles and 8 wheeling events on them and they're just now starting to get to the end of their useful life as a wheeling tire. Still probably 10,000 miles of road use left though. They do have siping for snow/ice. I ran the KM2 on my previous 80 during Snowmaggeden '09 and they were down right scary driving around once the roads were covered in packed snow.

BTW - It was nice meeting you this past weekend. It's always fun wheeling with another 80.

I'm running the Cooper ST MAXX which is sort of a hybrid MT/AT. E-Rated, 3-PLY armor tek sidewalls. I have them on my FJC and my Tundra (work truck) that I put 35k on a year. Great tire, quiet on the road and perform well in the woods. That said, I think my next set will be the PROS. I want to go a little more aggressive and they are getting great reviews.
The MAXXs have been a great tire though.

I have 295/75-16 BFG KO's and they are absolutely incredible. Off road performance is fantastic, no issues. Quiet, great ride, wet and dry performance is great, had them in the blizzard earlier this year and they were outstanding. I drove through 2 feet of snow with no problem, and hard packed snow felt like dry pavement. The only time I got stuck was when I tried to go through a drift that was 4 feet deep and about 30 feet long and I high centered myself.

I know they've been replaced by the BFG KO2, but I've heard great things about them as well.

I'm a BFG guy. You have seen what the BFG ATs can do on our cruzer, and they are an older set with nearly 30 thousand miles on em. I can't wait to wear them out so I can get a set of the new AT KOs. It is my understanding that they are even better than my old style ATs. On the other hand, My son has been running a set of the Goodyear MT Kevlars in the mud, rocks, and snows of the Pacific northwest for the past 30, thousand miles and is very pleased with them. I'd stay away from Duratracs, ( weak sidewalls ).. Vince, What size are yours now? I may be in the market for two for my trailer if they are 285s .. PM me

I remember a day wheeling with the group, while having lunch we realized something like seven out of eight of our trucks were on BFG km2 Muds.
If you are only putting 4k a year on Vince, go aggressive!

leaning toward Toyos. Have a week to go before finalizing.

Big investment. I got a good deal on the 315 All terrains on my 80, bought five installed for $1175. I'm thinking five Toyos would be in the $1500-1600 range.

1650 Is what I have into 4 of my bias superswamper tsl sx's 36/12.5 for a 16.5" wheel. I love em off road.
