Thanks guys. A lot of bs work got crossed off the list. I hate painting lol.

Next Im planning to shove the frame out of the way and diddling with the motor. Wanna do the oil galley plug, run a compression check and if that turns out allright paint the mofo throw glthfj60's header on there and sit it back where it belongs.

Then comes more freaking work on the tub..... Right now im close to saying f it and just bed lining everything lol. Even bought the liner gun the other day.

Well, finally got the frame/suspension shoved out of the way and the motor/tranny/xfer out front and center. Threw jack stands under the motor/bell housing mounts and it seems to be supported well... I hope lol.

I took a few minutes to cut off and move the lower piston mount of my engine hoist up 4 inches after the motor was standing on its own. I wasnt getting full travel out of the hoist, hell it wouldnt even come close to hitting my ceiling in the garage, and there was about 4" of piston shaft exposed when the hoist was lowered all the way. It will now go higher than the ceiling and still folds up mint. Maybe getting the motor back in wont be as much of a pain in the ass as it was getting it out.

After the hoist mod I took a couple minutes to clean all the grinding dust off of the motor and gave it a good wash with some degreaser. Next I pulled the valve cover and one head bolt and did the oil galley plug fix. Wasnt hard at all with the motor out of the van and literally took like 30 minutes start to finish.

Today Im planning to strip off a bunch of the accessories/intake exhaust manifolds, do some more cleaning and eventually throw some paint on er.

My budbuilt dom tie rod and drag link showed up yesterday so I got as far as threading in the new tie rods before calling it a night. Still have to paint the links some time.

Thats the update.

can't remember what you said the mileage was on it when you bought it (not that you can trust that anyway), but I do remember you said it ran pretty good ... hopefully everything's good on that front ... looking forward to seeing it outside the garage again ...

  • Lol. Yeah it ran good and plowed like a champ. Still have to check the compression but I dont wanna do that while its on the jack stands...

Mileage is unknown but its a 76ish 2f in a 69 40... Might have been rebuilt at some point but who knows.

Got the bb steering links painted today.

Also tore some crap off the motor. The t stat housing is off as well as the water pump, starter, fuel pump, intake/exhaust manifolds, carb, wires, and some other junk. Everything came off smooth and I only broke one of the short bolts that holds the intake/exhaust manifolds together. There was enough meat left hangin out that after I soaked it for 5 minutes I was able to get it out with a pipe wrench. Have to clean everything now and get it all painted up....

Speaking of paint, I went and picked some out today for the block and all the junk that bolts to it.... Lets just say that if this motor ever has to run hookers on the street itll be dressed for the job. Little more subdued than the big gay 2f but still flashy lol.

Wow ... I'm a slacker ... Looks awsome

Wow to see where it came from to where it is now....

My hat is off to you sir!

Thanks guys.

Figured out that Im retarded today.. Took the time to actually look at the production dates on both motors and it turns out that the one in the truck is a 1976 april 21 and the spare is 77 nov 5. Sweet. Shoulda done that a long time ago.

Wow. Shoulda known it woulda been good after following your other builds but I hadn't been back since page two. Awesome work there!

Super impressed with your fab-work, ingenuity, and overall flexibility / vision with the work you have done. I assume metal work is in-line with your occupation?

Pretty much blown away, but to give perspective....I got jumpy when I had to replace the voltage regulator.

Either way, this thread has been a fun read and thank you for that.

Thanks again for the kind words guys. Helps to keep me plugging away at it.

Nope, the fab stuff has nothing to do with my day job, just a hobby/obsession. I work in a smelter makin nickel lol.

my 78, 40 has a Nov/77 build date, so I guess your 77 engine is out of a 78???

That would be nice. I was hoping at least one 0f them would be a later model with the flat top pistons (preferably the one thats in the van now lol). Gonna pull the head on the spare and check it out when I get a chance now that youve given me hope..

I got the spare with a bunch of other parts from an older gentleman who said it was out of a parts 40 he raped for parts. Supposedly he had the motor rebuilt then for some reason left it outside and its now seized.. I wanna get it apart and take a look at how bad it is inside.
