Also, no joke. You need to start a side business making those sculptures for gearheads everywhere. Those things are REALLY sweet. I'd be your first customer.
Pete, my buddy got me a couple hand throttle assemblies from the 70 series mine truck grave yard where he works. I have 2 different types, the one in the 40 is a twist on/off dealie (clockwise to throttle up counter clockwise to throttle down) and the one in the 60 that's not hooked up at the pedal yet is a push pull type.
Blue, I haven't installed the ifs hubs yet, waiting on the sky spacers to come in. Didn't do the taco rotors because I didn't wanna loose any wheel stud length or reposition my calipers on the mounting ears. Using the sky spacer and fj60 rotors lets you keep the caliper in its original location. Anyways, the hubs are cleaned up and painted, new races are installed and rotors are drilled to bolt to the ifs hubs. When the spacers come in ill be throwing everything together and popping in the chro mo birfs n axles I have on stash at the same time.
Thanks for the compliment on my stupid little sculpture dealies lol. People have been dropping off old tools and junk for a while now so I have some cool material to work with but having the 40 in the garage makes me not want to grind around it too much. That and the fact that I finally had a chance to clean the garage this summer while the 40 was at Petes makes me wanna keep it somewhat presentable. It was bad man with 1/2" of grinding dust on most surfaces. Im thinking of building a little "dirty" room up in the loft of my garage with a bench and vice so I can keep the garage proper somewhat clean.
Messed around with my door locks on the 1/2 doors a little. I lost the bearings out of both lock levers so i found some plastic ones that fit and threw them in with a section of small spring behind them. The lock latch is nice n tight and doesnt rattle now. Put on some knobs i had on stash as well since the oe ones were long gone to finish it off.
Took it for a quick rip and i was like aw fawk yeah bud, the damned brakes work phenomenally now. Had only tried them in the garage so this was the first time i experienced the 4 wheel disc/80 booster combo and man itll put your face into the steering wheel.
I did notice a whooshing sound every time we shut the motor down so i popped out the check valve and sure enough it was dicked. I had a functional valve and a new grommet on the other booster so that got swapped in.
Speaking of brakes, i put them on the ifs hub swap for now. Trying to decide if it would be smart to upgrade to 25mm trunnion pins/bearings while im in there. .. Looking at front range offroad and 4x4 labs to see if their low steer arms will work for me.
Wanna try to get the carb tuned a bit this week if weather permits. Ever since we got it going its been running a little rich and popping out the exhaust, it also wants to bog if you stab the gas pedal. Gonna mess with the idle adjust/idle mix screws on the trollhole carb a little and see if we can get it to run better.
Np matt. 97 fzj80 booster, plastic toyota check valve, 70 series master (was told its an "hd" master from a mine truck but not 100% sure if thats the case....), jegs proportioning valve on the rear brake circuit, all soft lines are braided ss besides the front axle to caliper which are oem toyota soft lines. Big 4runner front calipers with fj60 rotors, rear fzj80 calipers with 80 rotors.
Dicked with it on my days off a little. The front axle got a long side truss that matches the rear truss job and the tailpipe got reworked so its no longer pointing straight at my ds rear shackle.
Finally broke down and tinted the blueish steering wheel black. Used adhesion promoter after washing with soap and water then sprayed it with sem? black vynyl/plastic tint.... stuff. I had used it on my head rests and it worked good so we'll see how it holds up on the wheel.
While i had stuff apart i stripped the black paint from the back of the cruiser emblem on the steering wheel pad and gave it a quick shot of mango tango. Turned out kinda cool looking i think.
Also tinted the faded to s*** seat belts and they look a ton better now.
Took it for its first rip around the hood today with my buddy Randy who helped a bunch building it. Started out around the block then ventured out farther when the confidence went up. We were giggling like fools the whole way.
Doesnt drive bad but i have to adjust the carb a little. With the choke pushed all the way in it would idle fine but bog when you tried to take off, with the choke pulled out slightly it ran the best its ever run and i was pulling 3rd gear up the big ass hill on my street. Mind you this is with 265 65 17 tires on tacoma alloy rims, guessing itll be slower with the big meats but i should be able to wind it out a bit more. Gearing is low so we were doing between 40 and 60km/h (according to the speedo for whatever thats worth) comfortably in 4th without revving too high but as of now it aint a highway friendly deal. Need to hook up the tach sooner than later so i dont push it like a tool. Brakes are fawking phenomenal. Front suspension is cooshy and the front end torques or jacks a bit on take off which is a cool sensation.
No real pics or vids due to havin too much fun driving around. Ill try and take some next time.
Dude, you need to go to MTO and get historic plates for that puppy and save yourself $90/year on stickers... (Maybe not quite that much if you are classed as "northern"). Here regular plates are $108 and historic are $18 per year. Anything over 30yrs can run historic, so long as you don't take it "out for a rip" everywhere every day.....
Update on my sack of crap, been drivin it around for about 4 weeks now and i still like it. Tweaking things and tightening stuff is kind of fun but i got frustrated with the carb/timing and took it to a local carb magician to set up. 2 hours later i had a different truck, no more lugging to the point of stalling if you gave it too much gas and it actually has a little more top end. Like just a tiny bit.... I estimate a 0-60 time of around 2:47 which is an improvement over the previous best 4:29 maybe, sometimes.
Otherwise Pete, the shaolin grand lectrical wizard, got the rest of the junk under the dash wired up so its now got a blower motor that works, wipers, interior lights, 2 12v outlets, aux lights controlled with 2 40 factory light switches, and a cluster that is functional but for the amp gague (wanna see if i can use the gas gague from my spare cluster to get a volt gague goin, saw it somewhere but thats another story). We forgot to hook up the cig lighter but that isnt a big deal and the stereo is givin me troubles. I think the plug in power supply is dicked at the female end on the back of the unit. The seller said i can return it but i may just ask Pete to hardwire it so it has a pigtail stickin out of the back to replace the plug.. Damn thing works decent when it does though thats why im persevering.
Anyways, tightenin and tweakin junk now. Got the heater hooked up and vents back in, did a hillbilly allighnment, tightened the steering box up.... double checked important bolts. ..
Its fun to drive around town but i wanna go wheelin and see what itll do.
Nah the heats been comin down on offroady type rigs so i did up some preemptive flaps. Quick release like my 60 flaps but not as cool without the van logos. Worst part of the deal is i might have to do up some front extension flappers if the hammer comes down.... 98% of the front tire does stick out past the "fender" but for now i just hold my breath and pretend im invisible when i see the law roll by.. Its worked so far.
