well, it's not a cruiser, but sure to have a great time in. Anyone have any stuff for this thing? I want to start with 35's, and will be on the lookout for a 5speed.

PS.
If your name happens to be Pappy, I'm all ears; it sounds like you've got a good handle on what to, and not to do to these things.

How much are you in a hurry? I will be pulling the W56 out of my 4Runner at some point. I would consider it a rebuildable core since it has over 300K on it. Still works, I'm using it. But with that many miles it will need to be refreshed. I will also have a 4.7:1 transfer case available.

Looks like a 1983 Gen1 Hilux.

Hurry is not in my vocab.
within the next 2 months I want to decide if I will be choppin it up and going large, or actually working on it. Raisin on big ars tires, or respectable Toyota pickup on 35's. either way the tranny and tc sound like they would be a great project for me; and much needed wind for it.

Is the gen 1 hilux a good thing? It's supposed to be an 82 with it's roots in the states, NM even.

'82 is the first year of the square headlights, and it should be a 22r engine (as opposed to a 20r).

If you do use pappy's tranny get a rebuild kit from Marlin with the HD input bearing. I had an '81 mini-truck with a 3.8 buick engine in it and blew up the input bearing on a swapped in W56 3 times. :whoops:

W56 Kit, 1985-91 | Marlin Crawler, Inc.

Because of the small 4-cyl engines the mini trucks need allot of axle gearing to make up for bigger tires. As a rule of thumb:

33's = 4.88:1
35's = 5.29:1

That's a few things I have run into that will help.

Here is the pirate toyota bible...it is a wealth of info:

very cool, thank you. BTW, looking at the snow run pictures Leni, it totally makes sense to me now, duh, I never realized that you were only chained up in the rear. The reason you had so much trouble, was because of the typical p/u on snow/ice phenomenon; no weight in the rear and no traction in the front! Oh well.

If you cut it up let me know I am wanting to pick up a tailgate for a couple of projects. I am actually looking for two tailgates. Didn't get the one at the junkyard because of bondo. :mad: Does it have Toyota embossed into to it? Thanks

It looks like it should be a fun project.

ok, I'll let you know for sure, but the top edge of the gate is kinda like a pringles style.

What do you mean pringles style? Does it have a bow in it? Picture by chance?

Cool.

I have a G52 5 speed/T-case that Is for free or take if you wanted it now instead of waiting for Jon to surplus his W56.

I also have a later model (84-85) front axle housing if you want the extra gussetting when you rebuild that axle.

How's the engine? If it has any issues: 3L with turbo. You nay thank me later for the suggestion. ;). I've certainly thought that a 1st gen truck with a turbo'd 3L would be the pinnacle of cool mini-trucks.

I have few valve stem caps you can have....!! :-)

Free?

just pull the 35's, and i'll take them off for you; no need to detach your air tanks/compressor either, i'd be glad to sort through all of that stuff for you in order to get at those caps man. I know, that's just how much I love you man.

LOL....
