I've read the remote programming instructions and all of the threads I can find on the topic a thousand times. It seems straight forward.

Turn the key to "on". Press the little green button for 3 seconds and the red light on dash lights up. Press the remote button. Turn key to "lock".

Everything goes as expected until I push the remote button and nothing happens. The instructions say it should chirp, but it does nothing. The red light goes out after 10 seconds or so. I've tried pushing the remote button and quickly turning the key off before the red light goes out. I close the doors and test and I get nothing. I even followed the instructions to clear all of the old remotes from it. I pushed the green button 3 seconds for the light to come on the dash then push it again for 2 seconds and the dash lights blink. After this, I tried the programming proceedure a few more time and nothing.

Am I missing something? Any ideas? Suggestions?

any chance the remote needs a battery?

Just out of curiousity...Even though you don't hear a "chirp" does the remote lock/unlock the doors after being programmed?

It is highly plausible your "chirper" doesn't work and thus no sound...Search "piezo" for threads on fixing that if you want.

Oh, and you know that just one button needs to be programmed correct? The second button is useless unless you have another Toyota with the same security system...If you do you can program the second button to that vehicle. Or, if you really want you can program the second button to your 80 I guess :)

It's a brand new remote, it was delivered by UPS today straight from Cdan. The light on the remote lights up. I thought the chirper was broken too, but the locks do nothing and the lights do nothing. I did realize only one button works, but thanks for the heads up. Does the procedure I'm using sound right? Does the door have to be closed when I do it or something like that?

I just tried it with all of the doors shut, still nothing. Anybody know how to trouble shoot these things? It's weird that it seems like it works and all of the power locks work and I don't have any problems with any other electronics. The light on the dash works, the lights blinked when I cleared previous remotes, but it does nothing when I push the button on the new remote. All suggestions are welcome.

I can't remember if the procedure is different from the FZJ80 to the LX450 but I don't think so...I think the difference is the procedure is actually in the FZJ80 manual but not in the LX450 manual (guess Toyota figured if you were buying a Lexus you could afford to have the dealership do the mundane like programming a remote for you :hillbilly:)

EDIT: Just looked in both owner's manuals and neither have the procedure...Actually there is nothing in the FZJ80 manual (makes sense since apparently alarms were port installed items on the FZJ80) and in the LX450 it just talks about arming/disarming and turning on and off the chirper

Anyway, try following the directions is post #9 in this thread:

I don't see a reference to turning the key to "lock"? Just (1) Key to on (2) push and hold the green button for >2 secs (3) Security light on dash should come on (4) Press key fob button w/in 5 secs (5) Horn should sound once and the lights should flash

You might want to try clearing ALL codes first and starting from scratch just in case...

I bought my truck without a key fob and a year an 1/2 later got one from a club member. I used these instructions and it worked perfectly. Here they are from the manual.

Thanks for the responses guys. I've read all of those instructions a million times. I've tried them 2 million times with no luck. I think I have a problem with the system. I've tried all variations of the instructions. Everything is normal until I press the remote button, I get zero response whether I turn the key back to lock or not. Has anyone ever heard of the receiving sensor going bad? I will look at it some more later. I'm going to pull the driver's seat out to get a good look at things. Where is the other end of the alarm wiring? Obviously it plugs into the module under the driver's seat, but does it go from there to the ECU? Any suggestions on what to check?

I read all the stuff slee has. Most of it is way over my head. The trouble shooting guide mentions a splice somewhere that needs to be checked on most of the suggested checks. I'll have to find it and check it.

find someone else with an 80. See if you can program your remote to their truck. This will tell you if its the remote or the truck. Good luck.

the remote is new straight from Cdan, it has to be the truck.

Could be a dead remote...even brand new. I ordered two from Dan years ago. One programmed immediately and the other was dead as a doornail so I knew I was programming it correctly. Both mine ordered were brand spanking new OEM.

You could try swapping the battery, but I'd guess you've just got a dud.

Call Dan Monday. He replaced the bad one immediately.

I don't think it's dead, the light lights up very brightly on the remote. I'll call Dan tomorrow and see what he thinks.

I did mine this am following #9 instructions. Alarm working after 8 years! dealer wanted 50 bucks to do it, it took me less than a minute to do it!

Question,

I just got a LX450 with no remote, but 5 keys. Did all these cars have remotes when they were built?
Can I buy a remote and program it to my car?
How can I check if my car ever had a remote?

Thanks,

I got a remote once, it turns out it didnt work on an LX, but another 80 one did. There is a thread in the FAQ on FOB's. See if that helps you
