Hi y'all,

I'm a foolish Kansas who just bought a 2002 LX470 with 140k on it at $9.5k. It's been in the Chicago area since launch. Ready to clean up rust, change fluids, and make any repairs necessary. Timing belt and water pump were done at 90k. Plan to change both diff oil, ACH fluid, power steering fluid, transfer case fluid, grease the drive shaft, installing stainless steel heater hose Tees, and buy a bunch of extra ACH parts... like a damn fool, hah!

Only came with the sub key. Plan to flash the ECU and program new master keys.... :p

Here's some pics.

What do ya'll think of it? Anything look like it's dangerously close to rusting through and killing me on the highway? Did I find a diamond in the rough or a rough rusty can?

Cheers!

Check in on my fuel tank replacement thread.

Body and Interior looks nice, BUT is the frame weakened?

Watch this video:

my recommendation with that much rust, is to get rid of AHC as soon as possible. your high pressure fluid lines are going to start hemorrhaging fluid and at that point you'll be glad you don't have AHC anymore
The only spots of rust on my Texas LX frame were under the accumulators where bolted to the frame.

Your future will be filled with broken bolts, curse words, and Portsouq orders, but anything is repairable. You may want to invest in penetrant, a set of taps or thread repair kit, EZ-Out, and a reciprocating saw if you don't already have them.

For context, my rig spent a few years in Wisconsin and had some decent frame rust prior to being blasted and coated. Many bolts are just rusty enough to get stuck and break off.

New mini induction heater was a game changer when removing my rusty fueltank.

Hey, at least you recognize your foolishness!

Seriously. Welcome to the madness.
Sincerely, another Kansan with a rusty 100.

Ayyy found me a new fuel tank assembly - $84 car-part.com plug. We're making headway. More money for AHC failures!

Think I should go back for more? Here's the LC it came off:

I call it prairie doggin' for parts, cause most of the time it's s***. Lucky day.

The third picture in your last picture post appears to be the intermediate steering shaft. It looks like it's about ready to break in half. If it does you're in a world of trouble. I would be focusing on replacing this as soon as you can.
