I am thinking of ordering the Toybox from Marlin. Will it fit my 1988 FJ62? 5 speed manual with normal 2h-4h-4l Tcase?

Yeah, im pretty sure you can put one behind an h55f, if you had a US spec 62 you wouldnt because the toybox shares lubricant with the tranny, for the auto you would have to do a 203 doubler.

Well, I put about 200 miles on the new gears so far and there is some reduction in noise already. Just not enough to hear the tires with the windows up.

I found most of the noise comes up through to shift boots, so I will be adding some kind of soundproofing to them.
Also found an interesting site for soundproofing materials Soundproofing.org. Think I might add a sheet of their stuff to the underside of my trans. hump.

The Marlin, Toybox, Rockbox, etc would be nice, but none would work with my trans. without replacing the outputshaft. Also the cost of driveshaft modification must be added to the $1500 price tag and the posibility of crossmember modification depending on the setup used.

Since I use my FJ60 mostly for 4wheeling/camping trips, I didn't think the noise would be a problem, and with a little soundproofing it shouldn't.

If I was still running the stock 4-speed, The Marlin would be my first choice.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll give an update when I get some more miles on her.

Here is an update for anyone interested.

I found the source of the really annoying noise to be a vibration coming up through the 4wd shift lever.

I wrapped the lever with dynamat to dampen the vibration but still allow full motion.

The noise all but went away!

I can now say that the t-case is very close to original in sound with just a slight whine when at speed.

I don't think I will need any aditional soundproofing.

so why cant you run the nv4500 and the toybox?

or if you can what is needed to be done other than driveline stuff, crossmember stuff.

 Yeah that is a good idea. Glad to hear they are not as noisy now.

you can run the nv4500 with a toy box. it is an option on the website. I have talked to them, and the price is about $1600 as I recall.

PERFECT!! glad my plans can continue on.:steer:

How much did the gears run? These the same as the Mark's gears from OZ or does AA make them. I have heard people saying both are loud but have never heard them.

Marks Gears are LOUD. If I can figure out how to fit a toybox (auxilary tank in way currently) - - I'll have a new TC w/Marks 1.07 gears for sale (less than 5,000 miles w/all new insides).

Some dynamat type sound deadner on top of the TC and some sound proof foam in the tunnel and heavier gear oil will help.

right now it's about equal noise 3" straight diesel exhaust, 35" STT's & Marks Gears. Bob

The gearmaster gears are on my wish list. Thanks for the update, I was starting to think that with the noise they wouldn't be worth it.

I'm running an H55F, USA Split case, 4.56 diffs and 36" Swampers on the trail (33 ATs on the street). On the street all is well in 5th gear... 70 on the highway at just over 2.6k RPMs. There are times I wish I had a slower option on the trail but what I have is SOOOOo much better than stock. If I was going to add the ToyBox I would consider going back to 3.7 diffs... Final ratio is still great, 3.73 are supposedly stronger than higher ratio gears AND 3.73 diffs are a dime a dozen...

When I started looking for some lower gearing options I found that there was no aftermarket transfercase that would work with my NV4500 due to the fact that the output shaft had been cut off for it to fit the stock toyota t-case.

I talked to AA and Marlin and the only thing I could do at that time was to replace the output shaft with a new one. It was quite a bit less expensive to buy the new gears then to buy a new case and outputshaft and have to modify the driveshafts.

This was a unique situation though and for rigs with a stock 4 speed, the toybox would be great. You could even sell your old splitcase for a few bucks.

I now have a 70:1 low range. Not ultra low, but better then before.
