Its official registered name is little red rusting hood but thats too long so it shall be known as "lil red". She came into this world in oct of 81 as a bj42 with a 4spd and no power steering. She lead a pretty easy life and was hardly ridden to the very low 200000k that is on the speedo now.Unfortunatly in the last few years she has suffered from rust and other ailments and was going to be put down.Dingo and i couldnt.stand the thought of that and rescued her and now are nursing her back to health.Hopefully we can make her at least roadworthy for our annual club run on new years day. The bad news is it looks like i will have to get a real job to pay for all of this.

that one on e saanich has been there for years and everytime i go in to ask about it they toss me out. it wasnt bad about 8 years ago but now looks pretty sad.

thats funny.... that orange cruiser... they almost sold it to me a year ago... the guy stopped paying his storage fee on it.. so they were considering selling it.. 600 was what they wanted but i guess the guy came up with what he owed because they never called...

so first things first i had to repair the exhaust. my plan was to weld it patch it anyway i could to keep costs down. wrong. as you can see by the pics.

so much for trying to go cheap,i ended up installing everything new from manifold to muffler including nuts bolts clamps hangers and bumpers. i start it up to check it out and am amazed at how noisey these diesel engines are cold, i look at the oil guage and just about crap myself,zero oil pressure. shut the engine off,pound head on steering wheel screaming things like why me cruiser gods? pop the hood and peel rubber boot off oil sender and no wire attached,reinstall wire and restart motor and presto,full oil pressure.

ya tape was my first plan but after inspecting and removing tape,goop soup cans and hose clamps i decided it would be quicker to install Jen-U-Whine toyota exhaust.It fits right the first time and i dont have to worry about it for another 10-15 years.My original plan was to make this a bush basher but after spending the last week going over everything i am going to keep it original bone stock.Everything on this rig works and things like headliner door panels,floor mats,dash pads are perfect.Other than the obvious body work and paint there wont be a lot of work to bring it back.So the first thing i need is to buy,borrow,rent or steal a welder that runs on 110 and is capable of welding sheet metal.and some welding lessons.
The parts i need are-- washer bottle,wind winder handle,brake pedal rubber,inside door pull,defrost lever knob,jack winder/wheel wrench,and both rear outside air vent louvers.not a big or expensive list.

progress report

replaced water pump due to excess play and leakage.
pulled glow plugs and tested and cleaned busbar and all connections.
did comp test while glow plugs were out. 440 440 450 450
happy with that. now that all the corrosion is cleaned off the glow system there is hardly any white smoke on start up.
i probably should replace the bib rather than repair it.looks like 79 and newer is what i need ,i assume 79 and newer usa fj40 is the same??
