Hey all, I have been popping on this forum for years referencing good info but now I need some help regarding a rebuild (possibly a swap now) I am doing for a buddy of mine.

My buddy has an FJ40 we were in the process of rebuilding his 2F due to a out of tolerance rod journal (#1). I pulled the crank this past weekend and mic'd the crank and main journals.... Needless to say everything is out of tolerance by at least .050 on every main journal. His cylinder walls are only .005 over but his crank is done (mains need to be line bored as well)...

We talked and pondered getting another 2f to rebuild but these motors are pushing 50 years old. Most of them are tired and we may run into the same issues and it will be a cycle.

I have alot of experience building Toyota motors but this is my first time with the 2F. I have built many UZ motors, 2J, 3S (I'm a die hard SW20 MR2 guy). I was toying with the idea of putting a 1UZ in or possibly a 2JZGE (non turbo 2J). This is strictly a weekend warrior for going out and hitting some light trails or putzing around on the beach. He did a ton of body restoration work on this truck and I want the motor to last him and make it so he can get parts. I think both motors will provide a decent torque curve for the 40 series and give him reliable power.

Is anyone aware of an adapter plate or custom bellhousing to adapt the H series transmission to the 2J or UZ series motors? I would think these H series transmissions would be sturdy enough to handle the 209-245 ft lbs the two motors make stock.

I would appreciate any info you guys could add to this.

They weld up cranks. GM V8 conversions were very popular and there are tons of parts and information. I was going to hand build a Corvette 283 for mine.

Yeah having trouble finding anyone around us (NE and Central FL) to do it. At that by the time we pay to have the crank welded, cut down, have the motor line bored, cylinders bored to .25mm over and order pistons and rings we are well into the cost of a newer motor swap. Yeah we haven't discounted the GM swap yet.

1UZ conversion is at the top of my list because of how cheap and reliable they are. I have raced UZ motors and they are very reliable and have a good power band for him. Just going to price it all out and see where we end up.

Just want to confirm the Rear sump in the 1UZ (SC400 1UZ) will clear everything no issue? Sorry I do not have the truck in front of me trying to think but figured one of you guys would know.

I am leaning that way (my recommendation)

No adapter for JZ available. If you were going to do JZ you might as well do 1FZ. Same amount of work. FJCO did make a boltup bellhousing but stopped selling last year. I'm going to guess they sold less then a dozen of them (of course people were saying for years that they would buy one if available)

with any V8 will need to move transmission/transfer forwards about 4-5" minimum to clear firewall. Plan on swapping transmission top cover to 60 version or using H55f

We're in Orlando if you need anything. Have lots of 2F stuff if you want to just stick with that too

So I have a question on line boring…..are the main saddles and caps hammered? Generally on these old cast iron blocks….the main journal housing(s) stay fairly straight, I’ve align honed V-8s when we used to do Hi-Po small blocks….but generally on the I-6, low rev motors, if there is no visible damage to the saddles and caps….just pay attention to crank shaft journals. The blocks generally don’t warp to the point of having to align bore, or hone.
However, crankshafts are getting harder to come by, but they are still available, top dollar for standard journals but there are a lot that can be ground to .010 under. A good shop should be able to weld repair and regrind….if needed.

Hey Matt, I'm about to send you a message. The guy that owns this actually lives in Deltona and just west of St Augustine so we aren't too far away.
