I am in the process of fixing all the oil leaks in my '77 FJ40. This includes all seals and gaskets.

I am also installing a new clutch and pressure plate with new pilot and release bearing. Also new input and both output seals on the tranny and transfer. I'm trying to be proactive and fix things while it is apart and before it is needed.

My question is that after the clutch install should there be a need to do any kind of adjustment to the clutch or slave cylinder?

I also had the flywheel resurfaced. How far can the flywheel be resurfaced before it needs to be replaced? Mine no longer has the step on it. Thanks <><

Then it was not machined properly by the shop you decided to have do the work...

Poser, thanks for the help. I know some things but still learning some others. <><

slave

I bolted mine in and it seemed to work okay as is. I think your okay as long as you dont slip or have a prob releasing really

bsmith thanks for the reply. I read recently where someone replaced their slave and had to adjust the pushrod. As this the first time I've ever done a clutch job I just wanted to know.

I wouldn't have tried without the great help here on MUD. <><:bounce::clap:

Yes, per the Factory Service Manual (FSM) you must adjust:
1. Pedal height (FJ with booster) 210-230 mm
2. Pedal play 1 - 7 mm
3. Release cylinder 3 - 4 mm (FJ)
4. Bleed system

#3 involves adjustment of the slave cyl. push rod

Thanks igotta40. Is it necessary to bleed the system if nothing is done to allow air in or fluid out of the system?

Go ahead and bleed it....

Probably needs a good flushing anyway.....fluid gets "funky" after a while.....

Are these numbers good for an older -1969 cruiser as well?

THanks.

Since you have serviced the clutch system, it wouldn't hurt to check the slave cylinder for pitting and the plunger for wear.
