Next week we'll install my new Chevy 350 and 700R4 into my 72 FJ40. I'll keep you guys posted on our progress and the results.

Also, Kudos to Slim-Jim Sickles and Downey Offroad for the parts and help technical advice with the endeavor.

Flash, Dealing with the pro's can really make a job go better. Looking forward to the progress !!Did you do any internal work to the 700R4 ?And are you using the stock t-case ? Enjoy !

I am subscribing... I have my 700R4 tucked away in my garage (has an adapter for a D300). Will buy a TBI 350 over the summer. This winter I will do my mods...

I'm using the stock 3 Spd Transfer case with mine. I can hardly wait to get a real overdrive. Should make the 40 much nicer to drive in all situations. BTW, do you just get rid of the parking brake as it is redundant with the auto tranny? What do you think?

I am losing my parking brake since I am going Dana 300, but I am planning on a Corp 14 bolt rear with disk brakes and will have the parking brake in that.

My personal opinion is to have a parking brake. Don't rely on the tranny... Could be times when you want the tranny in neutral and the rig to not roll, or? Who knows.

you're in good hands with jim @ downey; you could'nt find a nicer, more helpful and knowledgeable cruiser-head!

as for the parking brake, you'll have to run the drum either way since it's got the seal surface on it for the rear output. why not keep it functional?! most organized events demand that you have a working e-brake. most government safety inspections require it as well.
the stock ebrake cable will be too short with the th700 and adapter in there so you'll need a custom cable. i have done a few of these conversions and i always use a company called "california push-pull" to make the cables for me. they do great work and the price is not unreasonable. i believe they have moved to paradise CA.

whats a fair asking price for a rebuilt 700r4?

whats a fair asking price for a rebuilt 700r4?

I that this is one of those "It depends" type of questions. What version of the 700? Standard? heavy duty? V6 or V8 version? converter with it? 2wd, 4wd? stock or built, shift kit or not, etc...

Our local rebuild shops will sell you one (with core exchange) for about $700-800. I bought a used, recent rebuilt heavy duty (K) 4x4 V8 model with a Dana 300 adapter and HD TC for $500.

Any progress yet? I am going with this setup or Th350. Will be watching for more info.

sls019, don't go with a TH350 if you have a choice, grab the 700R4. They'll both take about 400 ft. lbs. of torque, but with the 700R4 you get a lower first gear and an overdrive gear.

good call Downey..reassuring me at the same time!

I've got a new 350 with 700r4 in my '72. I used a marlin toybox as an adapter with a 4 speed t-case. I got a GM k case tranny from a friend at a dealer for 1100. 3/36 warranty. Iron pig offroad did an incredible job mounting the drivetrain for me. I'm working on getting it running now.

Keep posting cant wait to see the pics afer you have everything installed, and yes the guys at Downey are great. Have a good one

Downey, thanks for advice. Seems that the 700R would be better. I would like this to be a good all-around rig( daily driver and weekend wheeler). I know that the driveshaft lengths will need changing. I am going to be using a rear aux. fuel tank also. Will there be any problems with this tranny length? I will be mating it to my stock transfer case>
