Hello to all. First I want to thank all of you for the great tech and info provided here. This site always inspires me to improve my trucks.
Now for the story on my build. I purchased my 71 back in 2000. I had the usual problems. Electrical gremlins;ugly paint;Cracked weatherstripping; and NO brakes! The brakes actually went out on the drive home from getting the truck. Very scary feeling on the highway. So, I had her towed to the shop for brake work. From there, I completed small tasks to get it running better. This process continued for about a year:

-rebuilt brakes
-complete rewire with Painless kit
-rebuilt the sbc 350( new intake,4 barrell carb, new radiator)
-light bodywork(sanding, cutting, painting)

This was my first time working on a vehicle build. It was very satisfying and learned a lot. Then I got married and stopped working on the rig. It sat for 6 years until 2008. Now I am working on the 2nd rebuild after finding this forum. This time I am trying to do it right, frame-off style.

Sorry, I have not found any early pics to include.
This will be a daily driver for my son and me. Also will use for a family weekend wheeler. Nothing hardcore. My son is 12 and will be assisting some with the build.
Now the plans:
-start with the chassis
-new 4" suspension
-mini truck disc brake swap
-saginaw steering conversion( should this be done before body is put back on frame? or when firewall and column are there?)
Also, would you recommend using a shackle reversal kit?
-Engine rebuild
-tranny rebuild(700r4)
-transfer case rebuild(oem 3 spd, floor shift swap)
-replace body panels(new paint job also)
-will fit later bucket seats to interior
-custom fab new body armor and bumpers
-35" tires
-rebuild roll cage

Anyways, this build will be a slow process. I am also working on freshening up my 95 Tacoma. Thanks for looking and any suggestions would be great. I have already gotten parts from several Mud members. I will post as many pics as possible! Here are the few poor quality ones I have as it sits now.

Welcome to MUD

Hello and welcome to MUD!

I am building a 71 also
https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/204950-71-fj-build-ugly-betty.html

I have put in a 79 2f, xfer, and 4 speed tranny with a 4 inch HFS lift and 33 x 10.5 on stock rims

Installed buckets and also did a frame off down to the metal which is complete except the external tub. Got a soft top made by ESHAN in Pakistan doing a group order from the site

I haven't posted many pics lately as I have been doing necessary but not very exciting work lately

Coolerman also has a 71 and a great web site for reference as well as a download-able electrical schematic and an FSM

There are a lot of good vendors on here

The SOR catalog is a great reference for parts on just about every part of the Fj

While you are at it check out the FAQ section--lots of good stuff there

Looking forward to seeing the progress:cheers:

Thanks bsmith123. I have been lurking thru the buildups you mentioned. They are all very good. They help me constantly to improve my work. Good luck with your 71 also. I really like the earlier cruisers. I will be posting more higher quality pics as i complete different tasks.

Nice to see another '71 being put back and not parted out.

It's great to see you doing this with your son. My son is the one that got me hooked on these, he was 14 when he got his '73. We had a blast working on it.

Good Luck to the both of you.

Thanks for the good words Thornton. Yes working with my boy will add to the enjoyment. He is just beginning to take interest in Cruisers and muscle cars. Do you have a buildup thread or any pics of your trucks?

New Year- Update

Well, have not been getting very much work done to the 71. Finally getting started again for 2010. I have gotten the frame cleaned up and primed/painted.
