New Cat AND NOW Muffler are in!

I went down to my local mom and pop shop Friday and talked about options for my cats...they were a little bent and the flanges didn't mate correctly at all anymore. I was a little tired of getting light headed on the trail after a few hours.

So, they looked up the engine specs, the dimensions I wanted (to fit under slee sliders) and came up with this little guy from GM. It is 14", high flow, turbo rated, and good to 5.7L. The tech even angled things up so they clear the outriggers on the sliders.

Cool beans!

The best part? $197 installed, after tax. Shabam!

Crap, I knew you all would ask! I had to call since I had no idea and the invoice was wrong...and it is magnaflow "for a GM", not a GM part.

The Magnaflow part # is 94835 for 2.25 and 94836 for 2.5" and is rated up to 6.2L max.

I have a magnaflow/flowmaster knock off muffler already on. Stock run to the rear bumper. The crossover has a big ol piece of plate to skid on so it doesn't get smashed.

The Magnaflow site says it won't pass Cali...it is 49 state

The guy at the shop said they just got new part 3s for these, so unsure...they do make a Cali compliant version I believe.

A while back I asked a muffler guy about the cats. He said that for the visual smog inspection my vehicle needed two have cats. This was corroborated by the guy who inspected my rig when I last smoged it. So the question would be, would two of these cats do the trick? Is it overkill? Any other solutions?

Hi Dan- I'm in Atlanta also, and my 80 series needs a new cat. I still get the occasional thrown code, and the 02s are new, and no leaks- its time to try the cat now.

What is the name/address of the place, I'm on the east side of town but will travel if they do a good job like that.

Cali doesn't really do vehicle inspections. Mainly they smog a vehicle and while they do this visually inspect that all the smog equipment is in place. I'm sure this is what Alvaro is talking about. So your buddy would have to own a smog station and I'm certain if they start letting things slide it could cost them their license. Which after having to put a dyno in to qualify for smog checks would not be a good business option.

You could have them look up my name and get the same deal done that way, same pricing. If you have sliders they even know where to put it in so it doesn't hit the slee (for future upgrade, for example)

actually quite nice. I got rid of the flowmaster that was WAY too loud.

this is one tone higher than stock. Hard to tell it is not stock with larger pipes to be honest.

That is good to know because I have not had much luck with after market, because of the drone.

I have so much road noise and MTR hum I can't even hear the tone on this one.

Hi all. I thought i would ressurect this thread. I've got a '94 80 with 150k and i need some advice about replacing the 02 sensors and cat. My CEL came on right before a 2k mile trip up to Canada - at this point I've done 2400 miles with the CEL. Code is 28. I went out and got a pair of bosch universal o2 sensors but cannot for the life of me get the damn nuts off the stock sensors. I am going to drop the entire exhaust this weekend and really have at it with heat but it looks like I might need to cut them out.

Anyhow -- if I am going to go thru the trouble of taking the whole damn thing out I figure I might as well go ahead and replace the cats. Am I just throwing my $away or should I go ahead and "preventatively" replace them? I will need to retain at least 1 cat. Can someone point me in the right direction on a y with 2 o2 bungs into 1 cat? When I look for the 94340 from magnaflow I can't find one with two in one out? Any suggestions for a shop in Southern CT? thanks!

It's really a judgment decision. I had the CEL light and it was PO420 "insufficient cat". I replaced the two O2 sensors with ones from sparkplugs.com; they were denso sensors. Then, i realized that the gasket between the two cats had let go and i had an exhaust leak. Once i fixed that, i never have had the CEL since.
