And a few more..

The finished material was 6' wide by 7' out and weighed 13 lbs. with material, pipe, hardware and brackets. I used a piece of 1/8" x 1" tubing at the end, and filled the ends with hardwood dowel. Then I'll install some eyehooks to fit over the adjustable poles in the dowel ends.

I Have an Erection!!

Glue was dry so I tried a setup before dark...except for the gale force winds here tonight it went pretty smooth. Now I can measure and cut the aluminum poles going from the trailer to the outside edge.

Thanks Doc..it's windy as all hell her tonight..so I'm leaving it up to see if it can take it. Hopefully I won't find it in aheap in the morning.

what is the inside height of it? and area?

It's 6 foot wide by 6'-10" out..and there is about 6'-2" under it. There are side poles not yet attached with velco fastners that will help take the sag out of the middle.

Thanks Dave..I really had a rough time trying to come up with something that will withstand highway speeds and normal wear and tear being set up and taken down...hopefully this'll do it. I would've been a little happier with something smaller.

I have off this Friday and Monday....so in between painting for the :princess: again....I'll finalize the remaining poles and some sort of storage for said poles. I really liked the way Roberto stores his in the tube mounted under the trailer...may have to steal his idea with his blessing...lol.

Been keeping an eye peeled for some updates with that hot rig of yours...any progress?

Pat

are you going to use something like a flag base (the 45 degree type) to attach the real poles

No Sami..I have an eye hook on one end that slides over the pin sticking up out of the adjustable pole at the farthest end. When the guy rope goes on it slides over both eye hooks (the pc. you see in the pic already has an eye hook screwed in at either end) and then gets staked to the ground.

On the side that connects to trailer I have a hook sticking out of the end that slides over the nut assembly on the big plastic tube.

it's probably not making much sense. It's supposed to rain here most of the day tomorrow..so I'll be inside painting...but Sat. morning I'll be working on finishing it up..so I'll take some decent shots..not the shatty iphone pix up above.

Last of the awning updates...it's raining here today so I'm ducking in and out of the garage between raindrops. The only real thing left is the velcro tabs on each side which will aid pulling the awning more taunt, but I didn't want to fire up the hot glue gun while the material is damp.

I added a center bar that just lays on there to aid in the support. I also cut the the Cabelas poles, inserted dowels, and installed lag bolts. That allows me to slip the eye hooks of each end over and assemble the pieces, then tighten down a wing nut....makes it very self supporting.

I feel it's safe to say Fernando doesn't have to worry about his awning business...lol. With all the time and money invested in these 2, I probably couldv'e had one nice Camping Labs model....but it was a fun mod. We''ll see how long they last.

now that i see that pic i understand what you were talken about. before i was thinken you were gunna replace the verticle poles but, im with yah now. looks awsome, simple and apparently functional

Total Deployment

Finished up the awnings today (poles, velcro tabs)...planning on a few days of camping and R+R right after Memorial Day. A little undecided what to do with the poles. In one of the pics you'll see a aluminum trough looking thing on the roof...but decided against that. I think maybe brackets on the outside..it never is easy, is it?:bang:

Ok..I got permission from the :princess: to build a new frame (2" X 4" x .125 ) and a 3500# axle with brakes. I'm just scared the current frame is overloaded and want something to handle w/e is thrown inside and loaded in or on it.

The plan will be to add a nosebox that will house 2- 6volt batteries, a pump, onboard air and small tank, propane. The extra 2' will give a proper sleeping length for sleeping on the inside if need be. The front will also feature a liftup tent for added air and ventilation. The 30 gal. water tank will be mounted between the wheels, and the spare under the back . It will also feature 2 -15" drop leg jacks at the rear and 1 in the front. Everything will be designed to be heavier duty.

The plan is to make the new frame and cut the the trailer off the old and weld it to the new frame....sounds good on paper. I'm not going to take up precious forum space with the details..esp. because it's not really an off road build, but I will update when it's done.

This is the "Trailer Tech" section, not the "Off-Road Trailer Tech" section :flipoff2:

I can appreciate the need for a heavy frame but you would be surprised what they can handle. I think the rest of the trailer helps "tie" it all together too and I doubt there is much flex left in the frame. Now the addition of the electric brake axle is a must in my opinion. What's your estimate on loaded weight of the trailer?

dude, how long did it take you to draw that?
