Intro

Hey Everyone,
I am new to the forums and the 70 series world. I live down in Costa Rica and recently purchased a 2013 76 (HZJ76L- RKMRS). I have been following the forum for a while and what I have read here led me to buy the truck. Right now the only mod I have is swapping out the tires, I have ARB front/rear bumpers and sliders on the way (Takes a little bit to get parts down here) and I am going to be setting up an on board air system along with a led light bar for the front. It will be a work in progress as I find new things to add. I have been down here in CR for 3 1/2 years, formerly from Colorado where I had a heavily modified jeep (since sold when I moved). I really like the cruiser and I am glad to be part of the forums.

Newbie -help in identifying 70 series in Ecuador

Hello to the forum. I am a newbie-my first post. Currently back packing in Ecuador and tired of carrying the kit (I am 61 years old). Decided to do some truck shopping and have found online what I believe is a 70 series 2 D Land Cruiser with the manual gearbox. I have not been to see the truck yet--it is 5 hours from here in Guayaquil by bus and I wanted to do some research first. Ad says the truck is a 1988 with 200,000KM. Warn winch, roof rack pictured in the ad.

The ad states that the engine is a 3200 CC petrol engine. According to the Toyota page in Wikipedia there was no 3200CC petrol engine. Closest according to displacement is a 3400 CC diesel in either turbo or non turbo versions.

Couple of questions since this will be my first Toyota-- what are the major gotchas to watch out for- things not evident to a non Toyota afficionado. Also what kind of MPG might be expected from this truck.

Any help or direction would be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help

Hi, this seems to be a modified and pimped ride.

It is a BJ or FJ70 or 71 cruiser. They either came out with the 4cyl diesel in turbo or non-turbo. Both 3400cc (3B or 13B-t, hence a BJ then) or in FJ guise it should have been the 2F 6 cylinder 4200cc.

Get the model code and post it here and find out what has been done to it.
If a BJ you might see 8km/l and more.

There are leaf springs f&r, solid axles and 5speed manual gearbox. Very good vehicle but as with all swb vehcles, rear space is limited. The back seats fold forward or could be removed and gives you more space.

Many thanks for the reply-Looked at the truck today-Turns out it has the 2F engine in it. Additionally 380,000km on the odo, some rust (although not what I would have expected with that mileage),Transfer case front seal leaking, shaft from the TC to the front diff has....well I ve seen worse U Joints but not by much..prbly the front bearing in the TC is sloppy from running with the shaft in that shape.......also the slip joint on the front shaft is worn out......leaking power steering box (not the pump), oil pressure gauge doesnt work (they have mounted an external one) and when I drove the truck the temp gauge never came off the peg---either bad sensor or gauge or wiring...or no thermostat......and it is going to need a clutch and tires before its driven anywhere much. Someone put headers and dual exhausts on it as well as rear disc brakes and I dont know how well the latter has been done. Aside from the negatives, drives fine on highway-oil pressure hot around 40 PSI according to their gauge engine sounds great-got it off pavement and in 4WD, locked the hubs----after the initial clack of the u joint on the front shaft taking up, 4H and 4 L plus 2 H all seem ok. No whines or grinds from the TC.Transmission seems to shift fine in all 5 gears, no grinding. Dunno whether they had the proper weight oil in the TC or not. Most everything works -electric windows, air conditioning and winch....vehicles here are ridiculously expensive and they are asking $9K (US) so I am probably going to forego this one although I like the truck a lot. Really do like it but my visa here in Ecuador expires 18 January and dont want to risk a half finished project and visa expiring. I probably could get it to Peru and do the work there but trucks are 30% less in Peru so I prbly will go down there and look for one. I sure do like this Toyota--rust in only a few small spots, behind the rear wheel wells and again in front of them on both sides, rusted through the size of a quarter in each place. Surrounding metal seemed good. Pulled some panels and got my hand inside of the body, filthy in there but only rust in those places.......I need to watch out I may be talking myself into this one. Sure did like the truck.......rust could wait until I get to Peru but--the front shaft and front TC oil seal wont, ditto clutch ditto tires ditto guages (to do it right will need a new instrument cluster, hand gone off the inst cluster oil pressure gauge ). May offer the guy a LOT less but still needs a lot. This is the first FJ I have driven and they are awesome machines. Sure do like this truck.......

Thanks again for the kind help and information

Cruisers

Understand completely. Since the last post I ve changed cities, currently in Lima Peru and the hunt goes on. Am going to look at today or tomorrow, a 1985 Series 80 (looks like ) 2 door with the 2400 CC 4 cylinder engine and 187,000 km on the clock. Problem is in Peru, gasoline is around $6 a gallon. There are a few newer Prados for sale here for more $$ but I can not halp but wonder if this older simpler version wouldnt be lighter on fuel.

Regards and more after I look at this truck.

Thanks very much for the info. Easy to become confused a bit since apparently the versions in South America vary from country to country. The ad is here

http://lima-lima.olx.com.pe/en/toyota-land-cruiser-85-full-de-ocasion-iid-456255564

so I am a little unclear about which this is. Checked the Wikipedia pages on Land Cruiser and am still a bit unclear. Will be interesting to discover. Also occurred to me that I may be violating forum rules since this is the 70 series forum. Dont want anyone mad....

Thanks very much.

it's an RJ70 ( based on the fact the add states for 22R engine ) kinda good platform .. I'm not 22R engine fan but if it's the E ( 22RE ) version it's better ..

8" axles / coil suspension / radius arm based front and rear ..

Thanks very much for the info on the RJ 70. One of the things on the gas burners considering what gasoline costs here--is the possible alternative of converting to GLP or LPG. Less horsepower but less cost...... wonder what kind of mileage this one will get burning gasoline and driven conservatively.....

Thanks again

I have 0 personal experience with Light Duty Cruisers .. you better search here around or in the mini section ( all US minis came with 2*R engine variants ) or open your own thread to make your questions ..

By all accounts the 22RE is a very good engine. A little light on power but very durable. It is not uncommon to see them with 250,000+ miles and still running strong. :)

22r is a reliable engine, however it is not fuel efficient.

Hello all! New here, this will be my first post. I’m currently living outside of Atlanta, GA but will soon be relocating to Maputo, Mozambique with my wife for her work. We just purchased a 70 series from Japan that will be imported to Mozambique. It is a 1994 HZJ77 with 156,000 km on the clock and looks to be in excellent shape. It is a little scary buying a vehicle sight unseen but, the company we used is trusted and highly recommended by many of the expats in the area so we’re hoping they are right. Anyway, I have to say I did not know much about any Land Cruiser, but I knew if we were going to be spending any time outside of the city in Africa, that’s what I wanted to be in. Looking forward to learning more about it!
Regards,
Marc
