I got a friend going to check it out. Thoughts on the rig itself? I'm thinking about offering 8 because I was really hoping for a 2F but everything seems great. I've talked the the guy and he seems alright. Says his garage is full. Thoughts?

Just for reference, i have one here in the shop that had 15,000 dollars worth of body work done in 05 / 06 and if you look under Steve's build you will see what it got the new owner.

I myself am about 1.5 hours away. I am by no means telling you to hire me but i would have someone with really good knowledge of old 40's look at it. If it was only a few thousand then not so bad, but with this price it is just begging for it and i bet a bunch of people would agree on here.

IMHO too much for a 1F 3 speed rig.... but to each his own.

I am by no means an expert, but I can go take a look at this truck for you.

By the pictures, it looks super clean, aside from the transmission tunnel. The floor shift conversion looks to be done with custom parts and welding as opposed to a factory tunnel cover, etc.

I know you have a friend looking at it, so let us know what he says and whether or not you need someone else to go take a look,

Thanks guys. I will let you know what happens. I have also found a really nice 74 down near new orleans. Asking price is 12K. It is being sold by Lance with Savethelandcruisers.net. Anyone ever dealt with them before?
I am having a really hard time deciding which to pursue. The one in LA will be bought unseen except for pictures and video. They have repaired some rust already. I guess the real problem is I want them both :-)
LT1Fire - I agree with your assessment of the price for a 3spd 1F. I know the guy is going to think I am crazy but I was going to offer him 9K(Good offer?). With the extra 3K I could eventually go to a 2F and 4spd.
I guess the worth of something is judged by what someone is willing to pay. I have been trying to track the prices for which 40s are selling but no one is really sharing and what sells on Ebay is different then what is selling on CL vs. Mud. Have we ever thought of starting a thread for final bought/sold price with a picture and status?
In the end I know I will be happy with whatever I have. It is difficult balancing my desire to be a part of the 40 world and waiting for the right one.
What is a rust free 1F 3Spd worth vs a rust free 2F 4spd with 76K miles worth? Rust free being relative of course.
Thanks for everyone :beer:ing with me on this. I look forward to meeting some of you in the future at mud events.

The above middle picture is how it sits now. As well as this one. The lower rear panels were welded in and the prepped and painted. The inside looks really good. In a video of the interior there is a hole/light to the right of the steering wheel labeled brakes. Any idea what this is? If I can get a still photo I will add it.

If you plan on doing a swap don't even look at the one in Raleigh. Its really a "collectors" car that has matching numbers so to keep the value up you'd want to keep the stock engine and trans.
I used to come across this all the time racing muscle cars back in my high school, college days. I would look for a straight body and frame.... didn't matter if anything else was in the car because I knew I was going to change it. Matching numbers cars were always more expensive and this was back in the 90's early 2000's before they became collector cars and a 69 camaro with no trans or engine would cost 500-1000 instead of 8000 today. If you plan on wheeling it and changing it up... set your sights lower.... rust free doesn't have to mean museum quality.

And i've always thought that if you build up the vehicle yourself or are at least there for the process even if you have someone else do the work then it is more "your" car than if you buy it done.

Just my 2 cents....

x2 on Al..the few things Ive had to replace or fix - have taught me a lot.

Youve already got the mechanical knowledge- is it a lack of spare time that keeps you from learning body work? Ive actually found that I rather favor / enjoy body work - mostly because it has a definitive beginning and end - I like visual results. Whereas working on the mechanical, I quickly get frustrated. :princess:

In the end, its your money..eventually it'll be your 40. We'll always be honest in feedback and opinion. Occasionally we'll help you laugh at yourself. Whatever landcruiser you buy and whatever you do with it - youll still be accepted here...as long as you come to group events!

Anymore 40s porn for us to look at??

I'm so torn. I really like a project and that is a big reason I am selling the 911. But I am afraid that I won't drive it if it becomes a question mark of it starting when I turn the key...I only have a 3 mile drive to work so even if it doesn't start I could always run home...
Lance at savethelandcruisers is stuck on the 12K price so I think that is out. I could never do anything to change the 70 but I would love to have it as a time capsule if I only had the garage space for it...Maybe I should get it and then go on the real cheap for a project off road 40???
There is another one on the SW VA CL that has potential for a great build that I might be able to get for 7K and it fits all my requirements. There is a lot you can do with 5K$!!! Like finish building out my garage so that I can work on my 40!
Am I worrying to much about finding the perfect 40??? Should I just pull the trigger? Everyone says you'll fall in love with your 40 no matter what it is.

Chris,
Either buy one with great metal/bad motor, or great motor/bad body. Spend the savings fixing whats wrong. Darin (krzyabncanuck) can probably give you a good estimate of engine rebuild prices, and I have a feeling you'll find that to be cheaper than a lot of metal repair.

I'm in Charlotte, too, and you're more than welcome to come check out my 40. Bought it about 2 years ago after a year of looking. Found it 10 miles away and nobody can recall ever having seen it before. My point is to keep at it - use the time you're looking to learn more. Read a lot of 'Mud. I didn't find this site or ONSC till after I already had the 40. I'm lucky that I've not had many problems specific to 40's or I would probably have tackled them the wrong ways without the advice of these great people.

I'm in town today but away from the computer till night time. Feel free to call if you want to meet up.

The 74 911 is on pelican. Yes I am selling it. I usually catch interest once a week but nothing has come to fruition yet. Here is the CL ad for it.

JohnVee - I am working nights right now so my days are spend sleeping. Today I woke up early to take the girlfriend to the Amazing Maize Maze at Rural Hill :-) I am going to head to 4WheelParts on South on Tuesday to order up some tires for the Taco if you are free on Tuesday. I would love to check out a 40 and get an idea of the areas I should be checking out in person.
