Exactly. The tail pipe one had the isolator fused to the bracket. Since it wasn't available, went with the next best thing which was identical bracket geometry with a OE isolator.

Hi Geoff - fantastic info and pics. I have a 1978, and am ordering a new OE muffler, and this has solved how I will go about mounting it.

Would you be able to post some accurate dimensions of the new tailpipe angle bracket you fabricated? I will need to make the same, and it would be great to have some fairly accurate dimensions to assist.

Thought the muffler and mounting was different between 78 and 79. Also the 78 style was NLA. Believe flange was different and the hanger style on the tailpipe changed. I collected everything I need to bring my 79 back to stock except for the two studs on the back isolator pad for the tailpipe.

I was lucky enough to find that my buddy's bracket had not been fixed yet so I was able to get reasonable dimensions off it. Most importantly, remember that these are approximate. I would drill the mounting holes for the frame so they line up with existing frame holes and then the isolator holes to best fit your existing exhaust setup.

Thanks Geoff that's a huge help. Will I need that 'missing' dimension off the blank? Looking your pic, the blank is 105mm overall at top, but what about the bottom? I take it that measurement will give me the correct 'taper' at the RHS.

I take it (looking at your pic) that the two left side corners are square, and the taper is all at the right?

It would also be great to have some approx measurements of the position of the isolator block holes. I'm starting from scratch and don't have a current muffler sitting in place to match up with.

Yes correct. Being a 1978 my car should have the older style mounting, but at some point a PO installed a very incorrectly routed custom exhaust, so the OE muffler/mounting is long gone.

I will be buying the new OE muffler that is available (17430-61120), and for reasons of simplicity will be adopting the later style mount as the muffler is equipped for that.

Doh! Clearly that missing dimension would help! See revised pic.

Two corners are square as shown now.

Regarding isolator mounting, take a look at the pics in he post from March. They line up on the outside edge. Just align the holes with the existing threaded pins on the isolator. I don't have measurements handy and the original didn t use a 2 prong isolator.

So I learned the hard way that the rear brackets are handed. I got the one for the diesel which was reversed of what I needed. Although it made it easier to make a reverse.

The isolator itself and the nuts are still available. The nuts shown are temps.

Yes. The goal is to not have either isolator under stress/strain under normal circumstances. So when the truck is sitting normally the isolators should be sitting straight. Since they can flex, if the muffler/exhaust is not aligned, the isolators can be put under constant tension/side load if not careful, leading to premature failure.

Someone gave a good FJ60 muffler/tailpipe for my FJ62. The inlet pipe was to long for my FJ62 and the wrong flange. That flange matches the 79+ FJ40 so that is what I will use for my 79. PO had some aftermarket muffler welded directly to the inlet pipe. In the US FJ60s are easier to find than 79+ being parted out with a intact OEM muffler.

I managed to get a hold of an OE chassis bracket, which has shed it's rubber block long ago. I'll just have to spot a couple of holes to mount the new OE isolator and I am in business!
 
You know, I just tell him what year cruiser the part is for and he know's exactly what I need. He is old school in many ways and knows every part down to the finest detail.

He only accepts phone orders. Many times he answers the phone right away. A couple times he's been on another call and asks if I can call him in 5 minutes. If I call him at an odd hour I leave a message and he calls me back with yeah or neah the next day. Usually it's a yeah followed by would you like Freeborn Red, Olive, Mustard, Cygnus, ect..? He does have a $100 minimum order. So, I try to have a list ready with a few parts I need or will be needing in the future.

Making the call to Mark's for some may be like a reluctant trip to see a message therapist for the first time. A little uncomfortable going in, and feeling freaking awesome after the visit. If he's not swamped he may even tell you short story.

Where did you stumble upon the rear bracket for the diesel? I am currently looking for one to replace mine on my BJ41.
