I’m trying to restore a 79 FJ40 and could use some photos of a correct tail pipe bracket & cushion (right rear corner after the muffler) and what the assembly should look like when installed on a cruiser.

If what I read on the internet is correct I believe the 79, 80, 81 and perhaps 82 & 83 FJ40’s all used the same parts.

If you have any photos of the parts, I’d be grateful if you would post them.

Thanks

Here's what a mount from a 66' looks like...maybe helpful, maybe not

What year is the cruiser that is pictured here?

I don't see any nuts on the underside of the bracket mounted that is mounted to the frame. Is the bottom of the rubber cushion bonded directly to the metal bracket

I've spent hundreds of hours doing internet searches for parts for my project over the last 15 months and Mark's website never came up in any search. Thanks for the lead. Do you know if there is any way to contact him besides phone?

What part did you get from him and do you know the part number?

You know, I just tell him what year cruiser the part is for and he know's exactly what I need. He is old school in many ways and knows every part down to the finest detail.

He only accepts phone orders. Many times he answers the phone right away. A couple times he's been on another call and asks if I can call him in 5 minutes. If I call him at an odd hour I leave a message and he calls me back with yeah or neah the next day. Usually it's a yeah followed by would you like Freeborn Red, Olive, Mustard, Cygnus, ect..? He does have a $100 minimum order. So, I try to have a list ready with a few parts I need or will be needing in the future.

Making the call to Mark's for some may be like a reluctant trip to see a message therapist for the first time. A little uncomfortable going in, and feeling freaking awesome after the visit. If he's not swamped he may even tell you short story.

I'm sure you can look it up but here's his number 1 (818) 953-9230

It's a 1980, which is identical to a '79.

Here's a view from above the bracket:

Thank you been trying to get a picture of that bracket for a while. Willing to buy a OEM muffler for my 79 but know by rear bracket wasn't original. I'll bet the metal part could be reproduced if a person had to pattern it after. I know the 60/62 series use a rubber pad that has studs on both sides. Drill a couple of holes in the metal bracket and your set. Just need to find a original bracket as a pattern. Just remembered I have a 82 frame that has a bracket there I thought was something someone added later. This is a parts cruiser that the exhaust was gone when I got it. Time to uncover and take another look.

A PO cut the flange off the end of the pipe between the CAT and muffler. The flange on the 60 series is the same trangle shape with three bolts. 62 series is oval with only two bolts.

So I learned the hard way that the rear brackets are handed. I got the one for the diesel which was reversed of what I needed. Although it made it easier to make a reverse.

The isolator itself and the nuts are still available. The nuts shown are temps.

Had that flange tabbed up so it could be welded on. Also here is a pic I found of the remade bracket test fitted prior to paint.

Are the rubber cushions of these pieces the same height? I see that one cushion has a hole in the middle while the other one is solid.
You're saying the cushion is still available? Are you able to read the part number on it?

Just checked my 82 has the bracket minus the rubber pad. Couple drilled and I should be set.

I was giving a 60 series muffler to use on my FJ62. Because of the two CATs the inlet pipe is shorter on the FJ62. The flange I cut still has enough pipe to weld to the other pipe. Unless I get a OEM muffler won't know how much was cut off the old pipe, but should have plenty. Surprised how heavy wall the inlet pipe was compared to the tailpipe. My original muffler had holes in both the muffler and tailpipe. Inlet pipe was still solid.

So I have a non-US truck without the CAT.

Part 4 is for before the muffler and part 5 is for the tailpipe side.

Here is a pic of 4 installed.

Similar to @Living in the Past the P.O. replaced the stock muffler with something longer so just hacked off the end of the intermediate exhaust tube. Hence the stub pipe welded on he end before the flange.

The part number for the isolator is 17567-61030 and yes still available (at least in the M.E.). They are the same height. Not sure why one has a hole...

I see. That isolator has 2 threaded studs on both the top and bottom (as in box 4), so it's not quite the same as one on the tail pipe.

Exactly. The tail pipe one had the isolator fused to the bracket. Since it wasn't available, went with the next best thing which was identical bracket geometry with a OE isolator.

Thanks to all that replied to my original post. The pictures will be very helpful. Turns out the PO left me the original metal bracket minus the rubber cushion. I already purchased a extra cushion for the bracket before the muffler. It appears that all I'll need to do drill another hole in the OEM tail pipe bracket and I'll be good to go.

The lack of the second sets of studs is probably the reason the original poster and myself have brackets minus the pad. Adding the pads with the studs is a improvement the original design. If they had the double studs studs originally the pad would probably still be there. Mine is a clean break off the metal not cracked and some rubber pad left behind.
