Pretty close to what I want too! :D

Sourcing a LHD factory 1hdte would be the biggest hurdle, but Christo at Slee Offroad would be my choice outside Australia.

We do many many 100 cruisers here in Aus, and Christo is the only other shop I know, I would deal with, outside of where I am here.

Many will promise, not many can deliver.

You are living the dream of many of the rest of us. Please keep us posted.

Sorry for the long silence on this project.

After talking at length with Christo Slee I finally accepted his advice and started looking for a larger platform to base the project on. We ended up with a Mitsubishi Fuso FG 140.

We've finally gathered all the components together and have started major fabrication. You can follow along with the buildup at: http://www.hackneys.com/mitsu

I'd like to extend our thanks to everyone on this forum. It was your open sharing, referals and guidance that enabled a couple of total 4x4 neophytes to get started down this path. We will always be indebted to all of you.

Very cool, thanks for the update!

Awesome! Sounds like a great rig.

Very interesting website. Good luck in your travels.

We've got a total of about fifteen miles on ours, all pavement, so I can't give any personal endorsements yet.

I can tell you that Carl & Mary Hunter made it all the way around the world in their FG on a set and never even had a flat. As far as I know, they used the same four when they subsequently spent a year in South America.

Anyone know of any US or Canadian sources for new 8.25 R 16 Michelin XZLs?

I've read they have steel belted sidewalls.

They also have a modestly higher weight capacity than the stock LT 235/85 R16 Yokohamas (6,393 vs. 6,084 front axle).

dhackney, PM Outback on ExPo. He had 40 XZL's as of last August. Not sure what sizes though.

Project Complete

This project all started right here on mud. I want to thank all of you guys for helping me out when we knew nothing. Not that we know anything now, but we've come a long ways from my first post asking for help.

I know this is not LC100 related, but I wanted to let you all know how things turned out.

Thanks again for your help. This is a super group of people on this forum.

Project complete Sunday 3 June, 2007 ~8PM PDT / 0300 GMT / Zulu

I believe you missed an important point, you need diff locks front and rear, having winches front and rear is good, but you really don't want to use them unless you are really stuck. With a LSD and open diff you will get stuck big time, most LSD are useless, spend the money and have someone fab/fit difflocks, you will not regret it if you intend to use your vehicle the way you say you will. Otherwise be prepared for wasting lots of time and effort winching and farting around for hours on end and not getting to the places you want to go. My 0.02
