If it is the transfer case shift knob, then rotate the knob counterclockwise to remove.

The two screws should be all that hold the knob on. I had mine off not long ago. Watch out for the springs and smaller parts for the main button on the knob once you have it off. Its not difficult to let them fall between the seats if your not careful (ask me how I know ).

Thanks guys, very easy when you find the screws that are in plain view. I'm a dumb ass.

What about the O/D switch and associated wiring? I tried to get my shifter knob off a while ago but the O/D button foiled my attempt. How does it disconnect?

Overdrive switch needs to be separated from a plug under the plastic sift indicator housing and pulled thru the sift column then the button can be pulled out of the handle for recovering.

I ended up having to remove the pins from the overdrive connector to get it out when I replaced my shifter.

Hi, this is the closest thread I found on how to remove the shifter. But I still don't get it.
Shane's post about replacing the shifter leather starts with the shifter on his work bench.
Can someone jump in and explain how to remove the main shifter from the truck?
Do I need to take the center console out? or the shifter plastic thing pops out?
A picture would be appreciated as well.

Thanks

It was on the bench to show you what it looks like, you don't remove the stick portion. I did it so that you can see all angles

The bitch is not to yank on the wires, but to gingerly remove one and then the other and then reverse the procedure.

The steering wheel.

  1. remove side cover
  2. T-30 torx to loosen screw (will not come out)
  3. Right side and loosen that torx screw.
  4. remove airbag and un clip harness.
  5. set air bag on dash.
  6. loosen large nut
  7. install steering wheel puller and relieve spline tension on wheel so it slips on splines easily.
  8. put new wheel on pass seat
  9. pull wires through plastic rear cover
  10. sit in truck and position wheel at dead center and giggle it a bit to take of any tension and wheel still stays center.
  11. remove nut
  12. slide wheel off and set aside
  13. center new wheel.
  14. reverse procedure

RTH - What do I do next?

Shane,
The wheel is all done. But I am stuck on the shifter.
I took all the plastic off. I guess this is not necessary.
Luckily I did not disassemble the shaft.
I have the two screws out and the O/D botton is out.
I have to read again on how to undo the white wires.
But at this point I have to get th shifter done!!

Ok, to get to the blue connector I had to remove the center console and the shifter console.
To do that I had to remove the passanger seat.
I am now on the blue connector trying to get the two white wires out.

Going back to the car

Holy crap!

My 100 was a 30 min job, just sucked laying on the seat the whole time.

Yeh, the blue connector is not accessible without removing the center. I will take pictures now.

The new shifter is in place and the blue wires is threaded back in.

Going back to take pictures now before closing things up.

As I am going outside, let me know if the assemble sequence is correct, I will check back in 5 min.

First the O/D switch, then the shifter lock?

O/D switch, it will be TIGHT and if you look at your old and new the leather should end at the shoulder inside the hole.

Squeeze like hell to get them together.
