A friend is trying to fix the front brakes on his son’s newer 4Runner that has a solid axle conversion. He was told by the PO that they were Landcruiser brakes…

This is what he found…

The rotor looks like a ‘76 rotor, but the hub bolt pattern is smaller.

The offset is less than a 40 series. And the 4 runner brake pads rub on the centre of the rotor.
For comparison here’s a ‘76 hub and rotor.

Any thought on the correct rotor?

How to fix it right?

These are 4Runner discs we hoped would fit right.

They are too small in overall diameter and the diff offset is greater.

Hub bolt spacing seems to match 4Runner 5” bolt circle on rotor but the disc offset seems wrong.

Since you mentioned it first, it made me cringe when I saw it.

I'm looking at that double hole-pattern. I didn't know you could do that.

Post some dimensions of important stuff, hub, spindle, and rotor. What axle housing did they employ on the swap?
I was told they have 8” thirds for both ends. Beyond that i don’t know

You and me both

The rotor doesn’t look like its centred on the hub.

I drilled 4 new holes on my own so that I could use the NAPA rotor that was supposed to fit my ‘77 axle. And used the two smaller holes to make six smaller holes.

That’s starting to look like Swiss cheese.

It looks like a late model rotor from a fj60 or a something that, hacked on to an early disc hub. Early disc hubs uses 6 bolts to hold the rotor to the hub. They don't align with the studs. The later rotor uses 6 long lug studs that are pressed in to the later rotor and hub plus 2 bolts. I think he needs to use the earlier rotor on that hub. Once assembled with the right combination of parts it should all work on the knuckles.

‘76-77 40 series have six holes. They are 5.5” on centre.

This hub he is using has 6 smaller holes that are 5.0” on centre. The hub is also smaller diameter and set further out.

it looks like the 4 runner rotors would fit, but the offset doesn’t match the rotor to calliper offset.

Since I have never seen it, I don’t have enough information needed to fill in the gaps and solve this issue.

The rotor looks the same as the ones I'm currently running on my 40. I utilized the 2 small holes and drilled 4 more the same size so that it would bolt onto my '76-77 Fj40 hubs. Someone at NAPA world decided that 78+ rotors were compatible with '76-77 and eliminated the extra P/N from their listing. I don't know if it has since changed... but I doubt it.

I seem to recall an earlier thread, where a parts store sold rotors to a member for his 76 to 78 fj40 and the rotors were actually for a later model version. The store told him all the rotors were all the same. The store could have been NAPA. Below is an early style disc hub and rotor. The bolt spacing is 4 3/4" the bolt diameter is about .490". Like I said b4, the rotor in your pic appears to be the later style, which is held in place by the lug studs. I think tha hub is from something else.

Agree. Not mine, just some bloke I was hoping to sell some 4runner rotors I had kicking around. They look like they would fit the hub, but they have a different offset from the 40 series rotors the PO hacked in. I've not seen how the rotors are mounted, so I don't know what else has been hacked up by the PO.

On 6 bolt wheels the measurement would be to the stud 180* away... ie. 5.5".

The new rotors above are the ones I bought 12+ years ago that weren't the right ones for my 40. They could probably be opened up to fit my hubs, However, they are about 1/4-3/8" smaller in diameter. So for now they're shiny paper weights.

For comparison sake, here’s how they compare to my new rotors for the rear.,.

Tiny in comparison.

My current rotors are probably beyond spec… but still have 2-3x as much metal in them than stock Toyota discs. But that’s a project for another day…
Who am I kidding… another year
