so I'm doing a hub rebuild and when taking the passenger side apart I found a lot of metal shavings behind the locking hub. Wondered what I would find deeper in there as I've never seen this before. Unfortunately I did not take a pic. The top bearing was fried. Then while cleaning the grease out of the spindle I figured out where the shavings came from. The inside of the spindal shaft is pretty scared up. Could the bad top bearing cause this? Also, can I still use this spindal once new bearings are in place? I've done a few axel jobs but truly can't recall what the condition should be as I've never had metal shavings in there. Thanks for your feedback. Jim

I don't know where the metal shavings you found came from, but it's probably not from the ID of the spindle. There was another thread on this recently.

Reuse of knicked up front axle spindle .

The ID of the spindle shaft is just really rough cut from the factory because it doesn't need to be smooth. It looks like it's buggered, but it's not. Look at the Birf shaft that came out of that side. If it doesn't also show scoring, this isn't the source of your shavings.

I think more importantly on the spindle, look at the OD where the wheel bearings run. How does it look?

Great information. appreciate your response.

Yeah, inside of spindle normal. But there's possibly a reason why that upper trunnion bearing failed other than poor lube. Has the knuckle been apart before? Preload may have been off?

Anyway, I'd just get new bearings (wheel bearings too) and set to spec and go.

Good call. Doing all that. The outer axel nut was tight. Had to leverage a pipe to get it off. Not sure on the axel rebuild history. Has 340k on the odometer. The axel nuts had no chisel marks which seems to be common. Thanks. Jim
