I have a pretty decent 1975 FJ40 and need some advice on what to do, sell or get it running. To get it running I would need to have someone do it for me but at a low budget price range.

It had been sitting in a garage for the last 20 years. It had a 350 from the early 70’s which was pulled. Who ever installed the 350

did not buy/use the adapters so it was not done correctly. The 350 was reported to have been running when pulled. The body /interior are complete and can be pushed up on a trailer. There is rust in the lower rear quarter panels but very little rust elsewhere. It will need a new engine wiring harness. It has a roll cage .Should I sell as is, what would be a reasonable price range? To get it running should I try to find a complete 2F engine, rebuild/install the 350 and buy the adapters, or put a newer V8 engine and transmission? I am in Washington State and would like to find someone to help me out with this.

Thanks

It looks like a nice rig. My vote would be to get her running again and enjoy it. But even on a budget, these things can get expensive in a hurry, especially if you would be paying someone else to do the work.

I would say is to keep it. And try to get it running.
As @Greenbean said even on a low budget they get pricey. If it is already set up for a V8 drop a V8. Otherwise if you choose to install a 2F that is more modifications you need to do and cost go. Up
If you have the space take your time and enjoy the progress as you go.

Since your 3k miles away I say keep it. If you were close to Virginia, I would say sell it...... to me.

Fix it up and enjoy it, that looks like a great 75. Washington is the best place to play in an FJ40! Find a decent 2F and return it back to Toyota.

@Zuma Did you buy it? Sorry I missed the part you do own it, so how much are you thinking?
Besides the engine what else is going on?

We need more pics, along with what driveline parts were used to adapt the sbc and how it was installed. Especially since you say no adaptors were used for the conversion. You need to remove all the clutter and inventory what parts the 40 has to complete it. It looks to be a pretty solid 40. You need to assess it's current value and what it's value would be fixed up and running. That requires more info and pics.

I would say, unless you’re really into FJ40s or there is some family legacy associated with the truck - sell. I would think depending on condition 10-15k.

If you outsourcing the engine work I am guessing 5k for engine and install. You also have to consider a lot is small parts might be missing. You may have to deal with driveline - what was change when the V8 went in. And then you have a wiring harness, which be expensive I’d you farm it out.

Or you keep as is and wait a few years to see if you situation changes and you can put together a truck budget. Replacing this truck later will also be expensive.

Good luck in deciding —. 15 years into mine an it’s almost done 😂

My suggestion would be to find someone local who has a similar year and ask to drive it before doing anything. There are a lot of people around who love the look of the classic FJ40 but decide it not the something they want to drive. Few years back missed out on a 77 FJ40. Found out later it was sold pretty wuick. Watching mud seen the same thing happen many times. I'm either too old or dumb to realize how primitive there are.

Second if decide you go further would explore how much was remove or cut up to install the V8. There were some old conversions done using the original motor mounts. If there are still there getting a 2F back in there will be a lot easier and cheaper. If a home conversion for the V8 want to start from scratch installing another one. That not as straightforward as a 2F.

Where in WA are you? I’m in WA and if you were close enough I could come look it over with you and try to give you some thoughts on what’s there and what could be done.

I am over in the Tri-Cities probably a little to far away. Do you know anyone over this way that would be knowledgeable?
Thanks

Dang, just a little too far. I’m not familiar with anyone over there but someone has got to be close.

I had a stock 72 FJ40 bout 30 years ago really liked it. This one has the original motor mounts and all parts are there except needs a new engine wiring harness. The 350 came with it and is a mid 70's guy said it was running fine when pulled. Do you know if a a Chevy/GMC 250 engine will fit the LC motor mounts and bolt up okay without adapters? It is a 77 truck 250 the owner had rebuilt and up graded had less then 10k on motor pulled for v8 swap has a Clifford 6=8 kit . The guy who has it wants $2,500 for it.

Everything is there and the overall truck is in very decent shape except for some rust in the normal places mainly the lower rear quarter panels. If I decide to sell would be in the $12 to $15k range.

A chev/gm 250 is a straight 6 cyldr engine, and is not a v8. Clifford was a company that offered 6 cyldr upgrades for more power.

Yes it is a chevy/GM 250 straight 6 and already has a Clifford 6=8 kit on it. Do you know if it wil fit the stock motor mounts and bolt up to a FJ40?
