Im having issues with my 07 lx470 AC. took it to lexus and they diagnosed as rear evaporator failing. I can source a new denso evap for 170 bucks. If it was your truck who would you take it to?

If any of y'all want a crack at it, I'm happy to turn wrenches with/ buy beer. Thanks!

I would get a quote at Lexus due to it being AC - -but I think of AC systems as witchcraft - - worth a try. I tinkered with my GX470 system for weeks only to have the issue resolved for relatively cheap @ Lexus. But that was in KC at a dealership that appeared to be needing projects to keep their mechanics busy.

When they say it will be $1700, say . . well the part is only $210 at Toyota with my ONSC discount and $170 at XYZ and I am just thinking about doing it myself.

They should then start a negotiation process that will result in the labor costs being cut in half, and likely cheaper than Toyota or about the same as local mechanics. The part will likely be the same.

Of course this may only work in places where they have idle mechanics, so you may want to find a less-busy dealership than Johnson Durham or just forget about this :).

I got a $2100 original bid on the replacing the $0.50 seal between the transfer case and elocker for it down to $700 using this method. I simply didn't have time and it was the wife's GX470 "company car." Toyota wouldn't even attempt that - just wanted to swap the transfer case after MULTIPLE discussions.

I agree, AC is witchcraft. Took it to lexus and they diagnosed it as needing a new rear AC evaporator. part is accessible in the cabin on the PS firewall. quote is 1k from lexus to get it done. wondering if I buy the denso part, tear out my rear compartment, and replace the unit, if it will fix my AC. Alternative is to cap the rear AC and move on down the road.

For the parts ive had great experience with @Coolstream for getting quality parts for different rigs. Incredible knowedge too...... may be worth a call to discuss your options.

I've had AC work done on my 94 LC and my 96 LX450 at Yearby's Automotive. I find Norm Yearby to be trustworthy and fair. He won't object if you can find the parts cheaper.

my big concern is throwing time and effort on the rear evaporator, and then find out its leaking somewhere else. Summer is coming and I NEEED AC

Did they add dye to the system? If so a uv or black light will show you the problem. Might be worth a look. Usually the dye will be green and show up in the sight glass of the dryer. They could have used a sniffer but I'm not a fan of those.

PO recharged with dye right before purchase. That was in july. not sure if it would still show up...

^^That is the problem. Just pushing in a can of stuff from Napa may cause issues.
