Long story short, my son bought a '94 80 series with a blown engine. I went with him to help haul it home. The guy he bought it from told him the head gasket had blown and the owner continued driving until it locked up. Seller also told us that he had put a little oil in the cylinders to see if he could break it loose.

We are going to put a borescope in the cylinders to see what we can see, and maybe in the block if we can find a way in. and since we are there see if we can turn it over by hand. Until then, I assume he needs a new engine.

So, my question is, Who on here has engines to buy?
Thanks,
Robert

Search for new short block in this forum or go to your local Toyota dealer and order it.
If they tell you it's not available ask them to look again. You may be able to save some on the price
by shopping around online.

If you want a used engine check the Classifieds (Parts and Parting Out sections)

If you pick up a used engine, if it still has it's original head gasket, you may want replace it and rebuild
the head before you install the engine.

I ordered a new short block from Toyota from Olathe KS. 3800.00 plus shipping. Took about 3 weeks to arrive. Running perfectly. You have to add everything as it only has block, crankshaft, rods, pistons, rings and oil squirters. No Dowell pins or oil office. I transferred some unavailable dowels pins and put in new orifce. I replaced water pump, cam chain, cam sprockets, tensioner and chain guides plus all oil seals and new oil pump.

I went by the local Toyota dealer and they will sell me a short block for $4000. But, we decided to pull the engine apart and just see what we had.
So out it came, transmission and all.

Then my son gave it a quick wash with some degreaser, because no-one likes to work on a dirty engine.
And we started the disassembly process. Sadly the valve train took the brunt of the abuse.

After pulling the head, we found that the engine would spin. Luckily the PO had filled the crankcase with what we think was Marvel Mystery oil. We must have drained 2 gallons of that from the oil pan.
So, with the engine completely apart, we are dropping it at the machine shop today. They charge $300 to $400 to measure and inspect everything. Once we get the estimate we will decide how to proceed. It has been fun so far. And the look on my son's face when he pulled that valve cover off!!! He just turned 19 and has come so far, from fetching tools as a little kid, to working on aircraft and now his first Land Cruiser. And he is funding this project himself. He keeps reminding me that I still owe him a car, because I bought his sister one, but he is saving that for later!

I guess I need to start researching cams, I don't think these will buff......
Best,
Robert

Oh man that’s rough!!!! You can still buy all new cams from Toyota and an empty head, you will have to reuse your buckets and shims but I would assume those are smoked and rusted Like the cams. I had an engine I bought and the head and block had water in it I could not save any of it had to scrap it unfortunately. Nice gantry crane!!! And work space.

To th OP...
Wanna adopt a 62 year old. I don't eat too much. Beer consumption? Well...

Sorry, I'm not looking to adopt!!
The machine shop said the cams might be salvageable? I can't imagine how that would be possible though.
The Google showed me that there are various "stages" of cams available. I need to read up on that a bit. The plan is to stay stock. He wants it to last another 30 years.

Ah you just wanna flex, I see. Kidding aside that is a phenomenal setup you have, love to see it. Glad you knew what you were in for with that engine, that's the roughest I've seen by far. @slow95z is another member here (in addition to @Fj80oregon) that will sell you an engine, he's not an engine builder but good guy and slightly closer to you in Georgia.

Cirrus Jet?

I have a used 94 engine I would part with that runs.
