Looking for a reasonably quiet muffler that will mount in the stock location. Don't want something loud.
Suggestions appreciated. Thanks

I couldn't find any stock one. I would just go to a muffler place and see what they got or can get. Even with header and about 4' to 6' of pipe with a cherry bomb mine isn't what I would call loud.

I’ve put the Walker Quietflow on a couple 40’s and 60’s and have been happy with them. Always just looked through their brochure to find ones with dimensions close to what I needed.

Thanks Guys, I run a Walker on my LX 450 and am really pleased with it. Did not know thy made a smaller one suitable for the 40.
'll check out the Walker, that works for me.

Built my exhaust system using the above muffler referenced. Here is a breakdown, if helpful for you:

My Toyota dealer had one for my 1974, so I would imagine they would have one for your 1978 as well.

1/75 when the 2F started the exhaust system changed. Not going to find the muffler/tailpipe available from a US dealer anymore. Part number for the 78 model is 17405-61022. Comes up with it available from some overseas businesses. Also some aftermarket versions. Not cheap and may be subject to tariffs.

Yep I can't afford to be a purest. I'm happy that stuff works. Reminds me of the S&W fanatics that were advertising their gun as never turned - well the person who put it together turned it to make sure it worked correctly at final assembly. Plus I think they are all supposed to be test fired at some point.

This is the same reason I wen't with the Redline charcoal canister kit. Yah its from a chevy or something, but mufflers and charcoal cannisters... Im just not sure that Toyota has that much of an edge over any other major manufacturer here. If the OEM was avaiable for cheap that's one thing, but otherwise, sometimes you gotta make it work with the parts you have access to.

Thanks for the link. Your 40 looks great!
