Hey Mudders,
I looked through the forum and could not find a direct answer.
I am going on a long trip on Friday and just wanted to bring along a spare just in case (my OEM is running great, but you konw...) and I am running out of time.
On the NAPA website there are multiple options...different amps, internal and external VR's, 10:00 and 2:00 positions, 1 or two pulleys..

Can someone who has experience buying one tell me what part number to get for my stock 82 Fj60? It has one pulley on it now

thanks!!!!

It is a single pulley and the VR is in the 2:00 position. Also it is doubtful that NAPA will be able to actually get you the alternator.

I believe that most aftermarket alts end up having the incorrect pulley. Try ordering from somewhere like toyotapartszone and see if you can do expedited shipping?

I'm using the Napa alternator in my rig now. You have to swap pulleys, but it bolts right up and has been running just fine for me.

be sure it's clocked the right way - the NAPA ones I've gotten were not correct. I can't recall without going to my truck - but you want it clocked away from the T-stat hoses (clocked toward the PS of the vehicle)

I had the same trouble with a Napa Alternator. after several orders and many returns we finally got it right. yes, the pulley has to be switched as they come with a double pulley. You want the vr to be at the 2 o'clock position looking from the backside of alternator. It is now a running joke when i order from my Napa guy anything i order is either at 2'oclock or 10'o clock.
They can get it for you just make sure you match it up with your old one. good luck.

Don't loose the little key on the spindle! And crack the nut while the belt is still on to avoid frustration.

Here are some pics of the alternator bolted up. My OEM alternator had the hookups in the 2 position, the Duralast had them in the 10 position... but it still worked out. You can also see the original pulley that was swapped in.

That is quite an unusual item to carry as a spare. Where are you going?
And what other spares are you taking? Water pump, distributor, AC compressor, smog pump? How about belts and coolant hoses? Tie & relay rods w/ends. Fuel pump, thermostat, coil/igniter? Carb, power steering pump?

I know, because I've collected spares of most of this stuff, although I don't USUALLY bring them along, especially now that I trailer my 60 when going wheeling on the rocks.

Clutch and brake boosters etc? Spare brake lines, driveshafts, locking hubs, axle shafts, maybe a whole spare diff?

Sorry for the rant... But the alternator seems like it is less likely to fail compared to some of this other stuff... Maybe this all belongs in another thread. Or maybe Im just having a bad start to the day...

When I bought my 60 and drove it home from El Paso, I was 6 hours in to my 12 hour journey when my alternator seized in the middle of Big Bend. I was stranded in one of the most remote locations in the state for four days because I couldn't get an alternator. I really wish I would have had a spare. You can't fault a guy for wanting to be prepared.

I carry a spare on long trips to Utah and such. Not going to fault anyone for carrying critical parts.

I didn't carry a spare to Dusy Ershim this year and the alternator stopped regulating at 14 volts and instead had slowly dropping voltage output to 12 volts which would not have charged the battery. Fortunately, someone coming in late could go by my house and bring me a spare.

Regarding @CaptClose 's pictures: That's the wrong alternator.

I'm not faulting anyone for anything. I'm generally a "belt & suspenders" guy. The list I posted is what I would carry on a trip where keeping moving was critical and resources not readily available. I seized a water pump on a highway trip once. I was lucky in that I could get a buddy to bring me one overnight. I changed it in a motel parking lot.

Not an exact fit... But my other choices wouldn't work at all. It seems to be working just fine. I plan on having my OEM rebuilt and will change it out then. I'm I risking any damage using that duralast alt?
