Alright this is driving me NUTS! I finally got my new 85 (so far i love it!), and just this afternoon it started whining/squealing. It does this as the revs dip to 500'ish rpm and voltage drops to 12v. it idles rough (surges), and eventually will die.

it has been running like a champ until now (all of 3 days). I swapped in a Mean green Alt the other day and the belt seems plenty snug.

I'm worried about the belt/MG Alt, or possibly smog pump. It sounds like it's coming from lower on the front of the engine. (please don't be smog pump!!!)

I tried to get a mechanics stethoscope but harbor freight was out of course...

Anyone have an idea what i can check to track this down?

thanks!

The stethoscope's the answer: always unscrew the probe before storing it or you'll break it off. VatoZone & the other big crap stores might have one.

I was gonna suggest bread & cheese but since you're into distilled spirits...

The smog pump is a chronic offender. Since your volts are dropping, you might have a bad out-of-the-box alternator. Ditto on the stethescope thing, amazing how easy it is to hear a problem through one of those, Harbor Frieght has them dirt cheap.
