Had my fist welding lesson. Mostly tig but a little stick. Should start some cutting welding on the rig soon!

It Starts!

Got my Dad welding setup at my house now! Let the work begin. I got ambitious two nights ago and started sanding by rear quarter panel area as I had some surface rust by the rear light from a dent spider webbing the paint.

This is how the night ended I cut the rust from the wheel wheels and got most of the pitting clean.

This is how tonight started.

Got the inner fender repaired most of the way. I need to get some slightly thinner steel for the body panel as I was using slightly thicker stuff tonight and it was hard to keep the heat even.

Being that this is my DD I am going to get this quarter finished and sealed/primered before I move on to the other side.

Also if you notice in the picture above I have removed the window. I had read around about those gaskets being really dry so I bought some rubber treatment stuff from amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/einszett-9148...d=1366692089&sr=8-1&keywords=rubber+treatment

It was cheap and I figured it was worth a shot. I applied it several times over the last month and saw a huge improvement in how flexible the rubber was. Well worth the money. (Side note being that the PO could have replaced the rubber I might be selling snake oil but the seal did look really dry an crusted before.) For 8 bucks it worth a shot!

Only got a couple of hours to work on the cruiser tonight as I worked late.

Here is what that time got me.

Here is what it looks like after I cut and bent the corner.

I need to pick up some silicon bronze wire tomorrow as I had been using some stainless steel that my Dad left. It's just takes too much heat to get a good puddle going.

Looking acceptable to me so onward but I am about in need of an argon refill not sure what that will set me back but hey it's the price we pay to kill the rust! Thanks for the comments it's nice to get some feed back I tend to be hard on my self.

Been busy but not on the truck :(. Been to Vegas for work again.

Have made some progress. Cut out some rust in the rocker I found.

Had to cut out the inner rocker as well.

Here are the outer rocker I bent up.

Started getting it welded.

I am amazed at how long this all takes. It's not hard just time consuming to get it done right.

Here is a weld I am particularly pleased with. I am getting better at getting these results more frequently.

Finished up the welding on the rest of the section and got some filler to fix the little imperfections.

Here it is all sanded and ready for primer.

So much more work but it does not really look like it! Sprayed a high build filler primer and did some glaze work. Many many hours sanding also anyone want to buy me a DA sander?!?

image-3347610709.jpg

Ok but seriously anyone have a recommendation for a cheap one?

Wow nice work dude! She is looking good and looks like fun getting that taken care of. Try the tools & fab section for a DA recommendation, sucks that you had to pull the paint off the entire quarter panel but understandable.

I did not want to but as I was working I kept finding the small rust spots under the paint and I did not want to have issues later. The passages side was much better I only had a few spots so it made sanding much easier.

So more progress I put down a final thin coat of primer and will sand with 500 grit tonight and paint. No pictures yet.

Since I had the rear windows out I thought it would be a good and easy time to tint them. Super easy when you don't have to worry about the gaskets being in the way!

Paint night!

Wish I was able to paint the whole rig at once but I need another vehicle for that! Ready to paint!

Mixing. I got a great deal on the paint since the company I work for uses so much Sherwin Williams this cost lest than the PGP shop line if I bought it from the local supply house.

Here is the driver side after the first coat.

I applied 4 coats. This is a single stage paint so no clear.

Turned out good I know I could have done better but it would have only been in the prep work and I had already spent 3 days sanding and needed to get the beast back on the road. Only have some mild orange peel in a few spots and with some fine sanding and buffing it will look really good for a garage paint.

Good job M, the paint looks damn close to a dead match in the pics.
I used the 3rd Dimension product line from my local paint store when I painted a camper shell to match my Tacomas black sand pearl color. They were able to mix it perfectly. It laid down well, would of laid down better with less orange peel but that was operator error (me not having the gun set up properly). ;)
It was a mix of base and clear all in one.

Great Cruiser color choice as well!

Great work. You're making me more and more comfortable with the idea of tackling painting my own rig in my shop.........once I finish rust repairs.

What kind of welder are u using? I want to Fox some rust on mine and I am not sure what Type to get. Mig or tig?
