alright so seeing as iv recently bought a BJ42 and the plates came due on my blue FJ40 im thinking its time that i do some much needed mods to my truck. so here is the to do list

-tube fenders/slider combo
-new seat frame
-install my SM420/3spd case
-make new sag pump bracket, its too big and just not what i want
-get winch mounted to my home built bumper and wire in cab controls
-tires, im thinking a 35" interco SS tire as they are tough and supposed to be cheap
-new seats with 4pt harness
-install the CB that has been in my storage room for a few years

then the list of wants/maybe's
-skid plate
-full cage
-rear bumper/tire carrier combo, similar to what 2badfjs did with the rear stinger i think...
-almost forgot....LOCKERS!

the specs on the truck right now are: '74 FJ40 6x disc brakes and saginaw P/S the 35" boots in my sig are currently off the rig, they're just too wide. im starting this thread to kind of keep track of what im doing and also maybe to help keep myself modivated to get my ass down to the shop and get 'er done a bit more...ill post some pics of the rig in action and of the sag ASAP. its gunna be a slow build because im going back to school in sept and it'll all just happen as i have time and $$

Nice looking Saginaw conversion. Mine sticks out a hair past the frame and isn't recessed into the crossmember like yours. I like your's much better.

the truck is running a 2F engine, ring and pinion will stay at 4.11 and i have a SM420+3 spd case that i want to put in it for gearing

sm420 is a good option for gearing... won't be sad with that 7:1 first, glad to see another shade tree mechanic doing what they need to...

alright so....first progress update. been working on getting my winch together and going as well as modding my front bumper that i just made a few months ago to fit a winch.

with the winch i pulled the top half off, made a new gasket for the top end and drilled and tapped in drain/fill plugs. also replaced the key stock thats by the free spool gear (hope that makes sense). im going to re-make the solonoid cover out of aluminum and also make my own remote as i dont have one right now...

also some pics of other toys...
IMGP3125.jpg

the SM420 that i want to put in
IMGP3126.jpg

the 3 spd case if you can find it in that pic....im not exactly a great orginizer...too many parts and not enough space
IMGP3127.jpg

this is what sparked this whole build....tried to take a bypass and crunched my fender a bit so i figured the hell with it, i have the BJ42, so im gunna wheel this one hard
IMGP3121.jpg

mmmm welder, i kinda want to do some stick welding but.....went and bought the biggest baddest MIG that i could afford a while back....maybe next year ill get one of those stick/plaz cutters

got the winch mounted and on the truck today....spent way to friggen much time making those stupid square nuts that warn uses...made mine to fit a 1/2" bolt instead of 7/16". winch isnt wired in yet and im still debating in cab controlls with a smooth solonoid cover (no remote plug) or do a hand held remote...thoughts?

im pretty happy with the way it looks, i just need a fairlead and then ill get all the right bolt lengths for it.

might start re-making my sag pump brack after work tomorrow...the one on there is HUGE and gets in the way of my battery, so thats just strapped in. i needed it in the truck for grad and didnt have time to make my own so...fix 'er now i guess

well a bit of an update....spent some time on the truck this weekend and re-made the sag pump bracket that iv been putting off....i hate re-making s***, specially when i have to fix somebody elses screw ups but now at least the battery fits properly in the tray and dosnt have to be tied it, i can fasten it normally again. also got a chance to pop open my spare manual shift 3 spd x case and found it to be in pretty good shape...so next up im gunna split that and start putting my 420 together. im thinking a twin stick will be easiest/best but ill have to see what happens

well its been a bit slow lately. been going kinda nuts at work and when the weekend rolls around iv been worken saterdays and just crash on sundays so...havnt gotten too much done in the past week or 2. went down to the shop tonight and finished putting my SM together...need to track down some gaskets for the x-case and start working on shift linkage.

well im still no further ahead on shift linkage but i did decide that i was gunna start cutting and pulling the truck apart more so....i cut about 4 1/2" off of my rocker panels, i have about a half inch below my doors now. the truck has no fenders at all and i just ripped the seats out tonight. I would like to tackel the roll cage soon....P/O WELDED the fawken thing to the floor....so i will probably end up having to take the fuel tank out so i can safely cut the POS heep roll bar from the truck. I might end up borrowing a friends plasma cutter to get it out more easily. anyways....it looks more naked then i have seen it for a while. will be trying to get that roll bar out tomorrow after school if im not helpen a buddy get his junk running. I will post pics of the progress hopefully tomorrow

was wondering were you picked the steering linkages from... need to find a good source so i can do my powersteering setup... did you get them from lordco?

just thought i would throw some pics up of what i have been doin on the rig the last little bit....

IMGP3166.jpg

IMGP3168.jpg

no more rockers!
IMGP3169.jpg

pulled seats and tank to get the friggen POS heep roll bar the PO welded to my floor:bang::mad:
IMGP3170.jpg

my tranny nd case ready for shifters....gunna make shifters and linkage from trans to x-case from scratch...the stock ones rnt going to work very well for what i want to do.
IMGP3172.jpg

my steering linkages? i got my steering shaft from flaming river down in the states...however if i were to do it again i found a guy in vancouver who has everything you need for sag from box to pump and steering shaft....place is called steering solutions and he was very knowlegable on the phone...if i do it again ill go through him, not that i had issues with FR, i just like supporting local/canadian when i can. the drag link i bought from downey and will never buy from them again...not impressed with customer service or their ability to follow instructons.....theres not a huge amount of places to buy cruiser stuff from but between making stuff and everybody else ill manage...

hope this helps...i have the # for steering solutions down in the shop if you want...

nice work keep em comin

On the winch control question - the remote allows you get in front of the rig and guide the cable on when you are spooling the cable back in after use. If you don't do this you will have the cable climbing over itself and it might get jammed in or damaged next time you use it. Also, if you have the usual full 150', if it piles up on one side of the drum it can jam, the only way to get it out then is to pull it out with another vehicle or anchor the hook to something and back up, both of which can be difficult when you are stuck.

Lookin good man. What are you doing with that 10 spline birf? You should do in-cab AND remote winch controls, or get the wireless remote:cool:.
