Well, here it is: My Baja Rig & Offroad trailer...

The truck is a '93 and now has around 160,000 on the clock. Runs like a champ. Ran down to Loreto, Baja last Christmas and surfed all the way back on the Pacific coast. This rugged combo proved to be very capable and comfortable.

Added the ARB roof rack, ARB Outback drawers, and Bull bar. Old Man Emu heavy suspension (3") front and rear. Warn 9.5XP Winch. 285 BFG's. Lightforce lights, On board ARB air compressor & Recaro Expert M driver and passenger seats. (great investment in long range comfort) ARB 60L Reefer atop the drawers.

The trailer is off a 1983 Toyota 4x4 Hilux with the stock 7 foot longbed. Added storage box and fuel/ water carrier up front. She runs on the same Landcruiser 16" wheels with BigHorn 285 mud tires.

The trailer makes for a great remote base camp and overall mega-gear & two dog hauler. The 7' bed design makes for a great sleeping unit if the weather gets bad.

Hope to drive to take this set up to both Panama and Alaska in the near future.

Carpe diem !

Working on the pics...just found out that my newbie status limits my upload-able pics unitl i post 10x's...

will get right on it and keep posting...it's a proven, one-of -a- kind, expedition set up and hopefully worth the wait.

Okay...so sorry for the delay with the pics...here they are.

The Landcruiser and the trailer both carry full size (285's) spare tires underneath, so i have plenty of back up....in the worst case scenario, i could have 4 flats in the middle of nowhere and be still able to pull 3 back ups from the trailer (and the 4th spare from under the Cruiser)...(yes, i would have to leave the trailer on the spot and return for it)....

I can carry five 5 gallon jerry cans on the tongue of the trailer( 3 for gas 2 for H20) and am considering another 25+ gallons underneath the trailer where the old original fuel tank was located. (There's a ton of space and clearance underneath) I'll be adding a propane tank for cooking and a sun shade awning along with a Solar panel on top of the trailer to charge a separate 12V battery for the trailer before heading to Southern Baja later this summer.

The Old Man Emu (Heavy) suspension is ideal for pulling the trailer and the extra weight of the outback drawers & ARB Reefer in the rear.

With loaded trailer in tow, it istill maintains a smaller "aerodynamic profile" than the Landcruiser, so it has very little drag...I get about 11.5 MPG on the highway & around 9.8 MPG on the rugged, slower dirt tracks of the Baja Peninsula... i can go about 500 miles without a problem..:steer:

That looks great man. That's the kind of trailer a buddy of mine wants to build. Did you do it yourself or buy it that way? Nice looking. :)

Here's another...sideshot...trailer sit on the original, very stout, 4x4 running gear.

Maybe not ideal for hard core rock crawling like the Rubicon trail, ect....but, for what i like to do, its a great set up for long distance touring & gear hauling.

Unhook it...at camp... and then explore further :)

I like it! Nice lower-cost option to the expidition trailers and you can still get all the functionality. Plus its a Toyota!

That's a great idea, finding a none rusted bed is hard though. Are you still using the Toyota axle/diff in the trailer? I like it!

Do you have a full axle under the trailer? Is it just the bed of the truck or the entire rear half cut? I've always wanted to build a trailer like yours with the potential to carry a spare axle and tires in away that is usefull. Great job.

I have a old toy pu bed too .... I m still working on it , haven't taking it on the trail... Works good for haulin firewood and stuff around the ranch. I want to set my tounge up close to your setup... I want to build a bracket that will hang off the side of the bed for my camp stove and want to add a under bed tank for water.... Keep us posted on what you do

X3 on the axle and frame question? Is it a boxed frame or the truck frame trailer axle or the truck axle ... And why I'm at it how long is it from ball to rear...

Thanks
James

The trailer has the original Full axel and all the original running gear...I removed the fuel tank and am thinking about setting a stainless steel water tank in the same location with a spigot connection and shower hose option.

The lockable box up front is a must have and holds all the " quick access" stuff, some firewood, gloves, saw, ect.

I highly recommend the Old Man Emu "Heavy" suspension kit with this 7' Toyota Longbed setup...
