I started my truck the other day and it did not crank. I have noticed that this only happens the first time I start the engine each day, If I hold the key in the start position it will eventually crank after a few seconds. Yesterday I started the engine and it had one knock on the first crank. Today I started the engine and it knocked twice. I need some help guys. Thanks for any ideas as to whats going on.
I can't remember which way, but parking at an extreme incline or decline will cause enough oil to drain out of the engine to cause a knock like noise upon startup. I want to say nose down, but I'm not sure.
This kinda points to:
-low battery voltage
-perhaps a cell in the battery is bad so it's not taking a full charge, colder nights don't help. Check the voltage on the battery while an assistant crank the engine over.
-a free Autozone battery check is in order if you suspect battery issues. They can test the battery and the alternator easily w/o pulling anything out of the engine bay.
-if the battery checks out, then perhaps the starter contact. If this is the case, have someone tap on the starter body with a small hammer while you crank. If it cranks normally, maybe the starter is the culprit.

Same here. It happened twice in the past when my wife drove it. After consulting CDan with this, I decided to start with the starter contacts. Ordered new contacts and a new plunger, put them in yesterday, so far so good. It was very dirty in there after 12 years. I am glad I did it, and hopefully will address the problem too.
