I was on my way back home from Taos NM, we just left camp and I had the window down, after a few turns I hear the dog (Blue Healer) trying to stay in, but to no avail (I think she was on top of the ice chest at the time).
I see the dog leaping to the ground and hitting on all fours, and immediately tumbling and sliding to the edge of the road with the rivers bank ~10’ below. Luckily there was no on coming traffic. I immediately pull off the road and go running back, calling for her (Rio).
I don’t see or hear anything…..and thoughts of her falling onto the jagged rocks & breaking her neck, or breaking her leg and struggling to swim in the swift water below couldn’t be avoided. So I ran back down stream to the Cruiser (partly on the road) and thinking I should drive down stream a bit more to get off the road, and start searching up stream for her.
But to my amazement, Rio was running back from down the road!
Apparently she ran past the truck after I stopped and we didn’t see each other. (IMO She must have been dazed for her to run past the truck as far as she did).
She seemed ok and jumped back in the LC. I went back to camp to clean her up see what damage was done.
She seemed to have scraped her chin, a few small scrapes here & there on her legs and that’s about it. At this point, I think I’m only concerned with internal injuries that I can’t see (internal bleeding).
I left again and drove about 30 miles and stopped at a place on the Rio Grande to let her out to walk & drink. She did just fine and wanted to play and run, and even fetched the stick out of the river.
She didn’t sleep on the way home, only laying down or standing staring at nothing.
We are home now and she still seems ok. She followed all over while I unloaded the LC and even followed me up stairs, even running past me! She ate dinner with no issues and is resting now.
This could have ended very differently, and I’m thankful I came back with my dog today……

Glad she was ok. My friend's dog did that once, and he wasn't so lucky.

Good for you for posting up.

I'll bet you won't EVER let that happen again, as you shouldn't.

Thank goodness for second chances,

Curtis

Jesus. Thankfully things turned out ok. One of my biggest fears with our pooch too.

Jeez, just today I saw a Rottie riding on the back of a FLAT-BED pickup with no tether.

That's just negligent.

:o

My old Rott fell out of the back of a friend of mine's pickup. He learned his lesson, and never leaned over the side again. Luckily, we only going about 10 mph when it happened, and he landed in grass on the side of the road.

:crybaby:Ohh... My black lab jumped out and chased a cat while driving down the road at about 30 mph... :crybaby:

glad your pooch is ok

how diid he fall out of a landcruiser:confused:

Just because dogs LIKE to have the window open and stick their heads out into the wind doesn't mean that it's safe, or wise, or good practice. You often don't get a second chance to "undo" something that should not have been done.

Very happy Rio is safe and ok. Good luck!

The blue's are as tough as barbwire, she was probably more worried about being left behind than the fall.I would bet she is smart enough that she will not let it happen again.cheers

x2 on the toughness of the healers. Owned a couple growing up. I'm partial to Vizslas now, but the healers are good dogs.

You definitely got lucky...

Glad to hear all is well.

That being said...

Your dogs name is Rio - Kinda funny ;)

This was the same rive I got her at when she was a puppy. My Brother-n-Law got her for me from his family in CO.

I think she was standing on the ice chest (up against the folded rear seat) the widow on was all the way open. The road was a winding MT road and she slid and she tried to catch herself (by the scrapes out side the door).
I agree it’s not a good idea to keep the window open (or at least on curvy roads). I’ll keep the widow up some for now on.

Thanks to everyone for posting.

My bud has a bassett hound who always rode on the bow of his flats boat. I always thought it was a bad idea, then one day she slipped and went in, before he could turn the prop hit her. She's now a tripod, dogs are like kids, what they like to do isn't always best for them.

what is wrong with people these days?
i see this very often, dogs riding on top of metal tool boxes booting down Deerfoot (our freeway) at 130 k/h with no tether and the drivers weaving in and out of traffic... some people shoudl not own dogs. your pets are looking to you to protect then from YOUR stupidity, they can not tell when you will need to swerve, hit the brakes or get hit, i am not saying go over board but use common sense, a tether and a short leash will keep the dog from being able to slip, fall, jump out of the truck (box or rolled down window).
that being said you can not prevent all accidents from happening. 27 yeas ago i had an old Ford pickup and being fresh from the farm, our dog road in the back untethered like all farm dogs did bck then. i came to a stop light with a cop right at my bumper. the old dog decided it was perfect time to jump out of the truck and chase a golpher. the cops just laughed but it made me realise if the dog would have seen a gopher while the truck was moving he MIGHT go after it so a tether and leash was installed.
fast forward 15 years
i have my dog leashed to a cable that ran from one side of the box to the other this way he could look around the cab without being able to fall out. i am booting along at 110 k/h (75 mph) and i look in the rear mirror in time to see his color fall to the bed bottom and in the side mirror i watch as he slips over the side, do a cart wheel (dogs are NOT gracefull) and disappear into the ditch. i hit the binders, pull a U and go back expecting to see hamburger in the ditch but there is Billy sitting there with blood pouring out of his mouth, from his torn and ripped paw pads, knees all bleeding. i pick him up gently and load him inot hte back of the truck (he smelled like death). i took his color and slipped it back over his head without having to undo it... WTF!!?
my wife was in the truck and i forced he to look at him, it turned out she didn't "like" how tight the color was so she loosened it just before we attached him into the truck bed without bothering to tell me.
i road home with Billy in the back of the truck. he recovered but his back was never completely "right". he died 9 years later from a tumour.
now i am very careful with my pets... remember, we choose them, they don't choose us. it is our duty to our pets to look out for their best interests.

Wayne – That’s another sobering story…. Thanks for sharing.
I’m defiantly going to be more careful.

Even though he looks fine and is acting fine, keep and eye on him.

Make sure he is going to the bathroom (#2) with no problems. He could still have a turned stomach.

Since they are very tough dogs he may be running around on a fractured leg as well.

I hope not.
