Jim,
I have sent you several emails with a few questions. Did you get them?
Thanks.
Mark.

Jim,

Just got the cap & plug set today. Thanks!

What an amazing amount of info.

I half voluntarily desmogged my truck (1984 fj60) after a head replacement, I've studied this thread thoroughly a number of times, and realized early on my carb doesn't match the others. I think i have everything hooked up ok. I still need to send the carb and dizzy off for rebuild and recurve, and X the cat, but the truck runs pretty good, which is more than i could say four months ago, but could be better. It idles a little high 1100rpm warm, and could be more responsive to the pedal. I still need to do some more carb adj., timing, and check valve clearance.

I was wondering if some of you pros could check out my setup, and let me in on what carb I have, or if it's stock and I'm an idiot. Also if you see any red flags, or any thing that could be better on my desmog please let me know.

Thanks for all the info, and any answers you can provide.

Steven

It's a 1978 USA carb.

In your 1st pic:
  1. cap the vent fitting on the top front of the carb. (red circle)
  2. plug the large EGR tube on the outside of the carb. (purpl circle)
  3. connect the CB to the manifold vac fitting in frt of the carb. (blue line)

Ultimately, it would be best to get an 81-87 style carb.

I was watching a Michael Jordan compilation the other night and the announcer is just blown away saying, "How does he do that? How does he know?"

This is exactly what I think about whenever Jim posts up with this insane/arcane information.

He's just saying this to launch me off on the whole Aisan fuel systems vs. Aisin Sieki drivetrain components tangent....

that's easy enough, i looked at that mess for hours, before i committed to removing the spaghetti, then heartbroken when it ran worse after my operation. I finally had to ask. I knew if anyone knew it'd be Jim, how many times has he come through in this marathon of desmog goodness. I want to say thanks for sharing your expertise on the subject.

On my way to fix the glitch!

thanks
Steven

Done! I appreciate the edits to the pics it made that chore much less tedious. I'll fire her up in the morning, the baby's asleep.

I am in the market for a new/rebuilt carb as soon as I recover from the unexpected head purchase and a nice tab at the machine shop. any recs on a good source? I'd like to stay OEM.

One other issue I've experience after the desmog, and head replacement: after i turn the truck off, the fan on Driver fender continues to run. Is this normal? She's been sitting a while but i don't remember that before.

Yes, it's supposed to do that. The carb fan, cooling the carb so that fuel doesn't boil when it's hot out and vapor lock. It's on a timer and should turn itself off after 15 minutes or so.

The HIC valve does control the HAI for faster warmup. The HIC also provides (as the name indicates) Hot Idle Compensation, raising the idle speed when engine bay temps are high, to help turn the fan & WP faster and cool things off. So, if the HAI is undesirable, just cap off the HAI vac nipple on the HIC valve. HAI will be disabled, but the HIC function will remain.

The crankcase breather is a 90* rubber hose from valve cover to air cleaner.

Just putting together my legitamate aisin carb/2F desmog plan here...

I would like to incorporate all the little doo dads that can help.

Jim,
If i mount the HIC valve into my diesel air cleaner on the passenger fender, i can cap the nipple that goes to the HAI and leave the hose going to the PCV line T and it will still be of use?

..or will the HIC being mounted away from the engine farther make it inoperable?

Hey JimC!

I'm looking to get my carb/dizzy done for my '83 FJ60 now that I am desmogged. What is the current turnaround time for you?

Green Wire Mod question:

Is the green wire modification needed IF the FUEL CUT/DECEL VACUUM SWITCH is connected to the appropriate port on the carb (fuel cut port)?

Jim,
I'd like to get my stock FJ60 carb rebuilt. Keeping everything stock!!! Would you be willing to rebuild it? Where/how/when do I send it, if you do? Thx
