Very nice work Hayes! It looks like a nice cat scratcher;)

Question for you, I notice the top hatch is not secured (latched) Do you find this a problem? For example if you hit a large bump dow the hatch lid open and stuff bounce out at all?

How heavy is it?

I've run with a full drawer system for 2 years, now I'm going to change things up for a while and build a 1/2 drawer. You've inspired me!

Cats stay in the house!

No. The carpeting keeps it snug against the left edge of the box. But I haven't taken it over any monster bumps. I'm still considering adding a barrel bolt to the top left end.

How heavy is it?

Damn heavy. Didn't weigh it, but I can barely lift it empty. It's certainly burly and robust, but it might be better to lose a little strength to lose a little weight.

Good luck.
Let us all know what you come up with.

Just switching from particle board to plywood will drastically improve strength and lower the weight.

Hayes, this is a fantastic design, and I completely understand your frustration with measuring "on the fly".

That said, any chance you'll post the final dimensions, or even the sizes of each piece you cut? You know, for the benefit of us lazy copycats ;)

For the record, I'm planning the same project, except with two identical (but reverse) boxes to cover the entire floor. I'm still debating having a one-piece top. Once it's all done, I want to attach something like this cage to the top:

I basically work from my truck (paid to 'wheel!), so effieient storage is my number one priority right now. I like the idea of drawers for the essentials like recovery gear, winter clothing, etc, and a cage for the trip-specific bags and quick-access needs.

Sweeeet!
Now make me two of those and I will come by to pick'em up.
$2.79/gal. x 13.5miles x 900 miles x time x food=????!!!!:D

That's really nice! It's obvious you put a lot of thought in to it and how you would use it. Good job.

So I am looking at Hayes cargo box design for about the 10th time since this is the design I plan to go with. Although I plan on only doing the passenger side, putting in a cup holder for when there is a rear passenger and herculining it.
But one thing I have noticed with this box and others with the flip up top lid there is NO latch on it. I assume that this is because things placed on top of the box would snag on the latch but there has to be something out there that could latch this top lid and stay flush. Maybe a hand size slot in the lid and the latch on the inside? What do you guys think?

Great looking box!

Love the flip up, not only in the back, but in the front too. Excellent use of the empty space also.

Yes.
Didn't want to have a bolt or latch sticking up. I might put a barrel bolt on the end/side of the lid eventually, though. Probably a good idea to latch the lid somehow. Post-up with your solution.

Sorry to bump the old thread... but what are the dimensions on this one? Thanks!

Sorry, I don't have dimensions.
I sized the footprint off of a big cardboard pattern that I trimmed to fit. Even then, it was really an iterative process of fitting and trimming, fitting and trimming.
I could empty the box, unbolt it, and pull it out to measure it, but...

well was more just looking for basic external dimensions L x W x H. No need to know the internal sizes or drawer sizes or anything. Thanks much!!

fold down the seat and grab a tape measure

j/k

as you work on yours you will find things you want to tweak

Nice work Hayes,

I really dig the flip up top, that would be nice not to have to drop the TG every time.

very nice :cheers:i like how you made it so you can still have the 3rd row seat

nice work. this got me wondering if there is a box of sort that could be mounted where your spare tire goes. I have a kaymar bumper with tire carrier and alot of empty space now.
