Ok i took out broken thermostat stud/bolt repaired tread and now looking for the housing. Also removed spark plugs and was able to turn engine freely without any noises :). Now i am preparing to take out Holley 2300 series carburetor and clean it out(part number 7448). Does anybody has any info about those running in the LC? Also is there a way to flush gas tank without removing it from vehicle?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Just drained my gas tank, boy that old gas stinks!! any input on how to clean tank inside? pipe to fill it up is rusted inside so i am assuming that rest of the tank is too.

I just pulled my tank out to have it cleaned at the radiator shop. PO said it was done before I bought it but I kept getting crap in the fuel filter and the carb. It was an easy pull out, and for 50 to 75 bucks it will be done right.

Hi all
Question- do i need the evaporative unit(part of the emission control) on the back of the 60-40 split bench ?
I thought 71 did not have emission control. it comes from gas tank and then back to it.
Any info on that?

Nice 40 , Congrats:cool:
Would it be possible if you have time to take pics of the evaporator hoses going from behind the seat to the gas tank and filler neck?
I have a 71 and would like to put it back to the way it was.
Thanks
Welcome to the madness!:steer:

I am picking up my cleaned and repaired gas tank and radiator tomorrow, still looking for cheap water pump and thermostat housing :crybaby: (budget issues).
I am changing oil and as soon as the parts come in i will try to restart my baby.

Also looks like 3 on the floor was installed by Downey Toyota IMG_1330.webp
Now I am working on cleaning and rust proofing floorboards and Transmission cover.

I just removed drivers seat and discovered a "U" shaped band of rust - my guess - it was a toolbox. there are some holes that PO closed with silicon. Looks like whatever was there got ripped out - holes are jagged.
Good thing is there is no rust through, just some surface rust here and there - it was a S. Cali car all the time. So in all body is the least of my concerns for now.
I am planning to weld those hole shut and most likely put some POR 15 or Herculiner on the floor.
First i need to take out Holley carb. an clean it, drain all the fluids and replace them, bleed brakes and clutch and so on....
But first I need to figure out how to connect my gas tank without Evaporator so it does not stink of gas.
PO removed charcoal canister and closed lines with bolts, also one of 2 lines going into engine bay is connected to VCV and other is left open, guess because of the Holley carburetor.
Does anybody run Holley 2300 series on a F engine?
Any help with rebuild ad tuning of carburetor is appreciated.
Thanks in advice, MUD is really great place to get to know LC!

I like the colr of your '40. Same as mine!

I'm no expert, but I recommend you see if you can get your hands on a factory carb, and run that. Return that baby to all-Toyota and keep it that way!

Nice going. I'll be watching your progress. Like the rest of the Mudders, I'm a pic freak, so post plenty of pics.

Hey!
I just took out Holley carburetor and guess what! I has an adapter plate from Downey Toyota, looks like they did 3 on the floor and carburetor conversion. Anyway I am thinking to go with Weber and dump Holley(it does not look good at all). I'll put some pictures tomorrow.

71 FJ's rock. Welcome and don't be afraid to ask. These people may give you a little bit of a hard time, But they give you more info than anyone else could. A big happy family. And let me the first to give you the welcome sign.:flipoff2::cheers:

My new Weber

Sorry for the delay but got sidetracked with house projects by wife
here id the update: just picked up my new WEBER 32/36 from MAF, new water pump arrived couple days ago. Still waiting for thermostat housing and hoses.
Now i am getting ready to put gas tank and carburetor back in.
Since WEBER does not have return line what do i do with all the outlets on the tank??? I got 4 - i know i can loop 2 for the Separator, one is going to filler neck what about last one? Any ideas?
Also do you guys know how much might cost to reupholster front seats in So.Cal?
Here are pictures of the new carb and the rest. IMG_1357.webp Here is the carburetor and water pump

Not sure if someone has already told you this or not but I've lost my keys on an older car before and had a locksmith fix it. They have sometype of key they can insert and turn to get the correct key shape then cut it and shape a new key. I believe it was around $100.00 to have them do it.

Thanks for the advice Fryedaddy, already got new ignition cylinder with key from CCOT for $45.00, but i am still keeping the old one just in case.

I love the color of your 40. So what are your plans once you get it running?

After i start it up and hopefully there will be no major issues, I will have to do brakes and clutch hydraulics sine there is o pressure right now. Then I need to get new tires or wheels( I haven't decided yet if I want to keep old wheels - tires are gone - cracks on 3 original ones , spare tire is missing and forth one is mismatched). So I think that will keep me busy for few months, after this seats and maybe body - i would like to keep the color :) and then if its running OK maybe a modest lift. But for now one step at the time - I need to get motor going :) then will see. Definitely I would like to take it on the trail one day.
