This is going to be my build thread for Safariwagon-II! I have an on going thread on the USMB, so you can check that to get up to speed on what has been done so far, and I will then update both threads regularly with whats going on.

Here is the link to my original thread.

Enjoy! I will also post questions I have in here.

Cheers,

I still have to paint my valve color, next time I adjust the valves later this fall. You gonna stick with the red accent. That cruiser is so clean, looks great.

Thank you!

Yeah I thought the red Valve cover would kinda break up all the aluminum. Make sure when you paint yours, you get primer with Ceramic in it (Any parts house will have it) The Ceramic primer is great stuff, thick and smooth.

I need to get tires for this beast, I am planning on getting BFGoodrich KM2s, thinking of either 33x10.5 or 33x12.5 (Will 12.5 wide fit on these?)

I also need some random bits for the interior, like the passenger side window switch covers/holders.

I'm going to get new shocks as well, Looking at Monroe Gas-Magnums.

Sweet subie.

If you are not planning on a lift why not get the oem Tokico shocks. They are cheap and designed to work with your rig.

So, what does the '92 FJ80 have for axles? I don't think I have open diffs, are they LSD? And whats the point of the Center diff lock?

I would like to go with the OME 3" HD sometime (Whenever I get $800) lol.

The Monroes are only $35 each, and they are gas charged like the original shocks (But they have a larger bore) I think the stockers that were/are on mine were Gabriel though.

Happy to see the Subaru crowd made it over here, just as the Toyota folks are on the USMB.

IIRC my oem's were around $120 from cruiser dan at american toyota. The oems should have been Tokico.

The axels on the fj80 are open, the center diff lock locks the center differential distributing the power 50/50 instead of varying the power split.

Read up on this. https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-...2011-added-concretejungles-1fze-overhaul.html

I did a lot of reading in the link that was posted, pretty helpful! Thank you!

I found the tires section of that thread, but I wanted to get a first hand answer on how 33x12.5x15 tires would fit on an a stock LC, Will the 12.5s clear with no problem? Or should I stick with the 10.5s? Either way, I am going with 33" BFG KM2s.

Cheers!

Pictures of that Subaru really bring back memories!

My friend had one that we lifted a couple years ago. It was a piece of crap (horrible lifter tick, rust, failing transmission), but it turned a lot of heads. He ended up selling it for $800, he paid more than that for the lift and tires alone.

In the thread on the subie forum you call it
1992 Land Cruiser 80-Series HDJ81V

its an FJ80 if it was a HDJ81 you would have everyone on here asking how you managed to import it and if you would sell it :D

Ah, my mistake. I was reading Wiki and they listed these two model numbers.

So a few days ago, I was looking at the front coil springs, and noticed that the passenger side spring was turned and not seated in its perch (Causing it to rattle) Once I turned it back, I thought after getting the sping seated right again that the vehicle would level out, as it has always leaned towards the driver side. No such luck, would a bad shock cause it to lean? I don't see anything bent, and I can't find any other logical explanation. I have yet to replace the front shocks, I replaced the rear with Rancho RS5000s which was a mistake, they aren't even gas charged. SO, I am going to replace all 4 with Monroe Gas-Magnums, they still have the same amount of travel as the stock shocks (Unlike the RS5000 which are shorter) 23" fully extended, where as the stock ones are like 26" end to end. The Monroe's have a larger bore which will be nice, this thing rides like a marshmallow right now :steer:

I'm sure the tires play a big part in this, I still have the original BFG All-Terrain Radials on the rear (Remember, this was the tire they made before they replaced it with the KO) So the tires are rather old and dry.

Nice looking cruiser. I enjoy my 96 but always give the 91-92s a double take. I always liked the SR-5 wheels and Brown Toyota Cloth seats.

How about something close to 33x11.50 with OME 2850J Front Coil Springs with
60070L Front Nitrocharger Sport Shock (Extended Length) in front. OME 864 Rear Coil Springs and 60020 Rear Nitrocharger Sport Shocks in the rear. Add a OME CA77B Caster Correction Kit
and OME SD24 Steering Damper to complete the deal.

There was just a new video posted here showing the removal and pressing of new castor bushings. Its easy to do if you have your own press or just mark where you want them and have a shop do it for you.

Good luck with your build..

You don't need J springs to run 33s on that truck. You could run 35s with a 2" lift.

Yep, I know 33s will clear. Just wondering about width? Will a 12.5 wide tire cause it to float to much on snow/mud? I just don't think the 10.5 is wide enough for this vehicle.
