Is it ok to run unmatched tires on the 80 as long as they are the same ratio? These came on it, but I totally need to get new tires. These are showing their age (Cracking)
Also, What would cause a clunk when I change from Drive to Reverse? Almost like theres to much free play in the drive shaft when changing direction (At dead stop)
Also, when the trans is cold, it will downshift a little hard going back into 1st gear, but once its warm it clears up. I changed all the fluids when I got it, I am wondering if I need to change the ATF again, as it was really dirty when I changed it. I know I should have changed it twice anyway since the Torque Convrt. holds about half of all the ATF in the system.
Ideas on this, are these common issue among Landcruisers?
I thought I detected some birf soup in your earlier pics. Looks like a front end rebuild is in your future. Your inner axle seal is not so good anymore, and diff fluid is leaking into the knuckle, mixing with the birf grease and causing it still spill its guts out. I checked the knuckles and I guess they had almost no grease in them, I added 3/4 tube of Moly between the two knuckles, going to check and add more as needed.
Also drained and refilled the diff, The oil didn't look Milkshake, Was black though (And I changed it once before about 400 miles ago) So I am guessing everything on this truck is very dirty.
Alright, so keeping an eye on the knuckle and gear oil. I need to check it again since I changed it last and see if infact there is some milkshake going on. I am planning on tearing down the front axle come spring time (So I can take my time and do it right)
In other news, I am finally getting around to fixing my antenna which has been broke since I bought the truck. I have a used power antenna assy coming (Thanks ERG80)
After that I also have a used driver side mirror and clamshell coming (Thanks Arcteryx) No more shattered mirror
To shorten your next questions:
If 31.5-32" tires, 4.10:1
If at least 33" tires, 4.56:1 <= most skip this one. 285/75R16 users usually stick to 4.10:1.
If at least 35" tires, 4.88:1 <= IMHO the sweet spot for 315/75R16
If at least 37" tires, 5.29:1 <= Pinion becomes small - but not a lot of people have broken them that I've heard of - of course if you're running 37" and larger tires, good chance you're planning to break stuff anyway.
There are variations of the above. Some people run 37" tires on stock gears. I think they're nuts.
I'm supercharged on my '96 and running 4.88 gears on 315/75R16 tires. For me that's a very good 'sweet spot' in the set up.

I actually thought it would have been a larger number to be honest, seeing as a Subaru outback runs 4.44 gears.

Update on the rig, Installed the power antenna I got from ERG80 along with the Mirror and column cover I got from Arcteryx. Painted both mirrors with Rustolium Truckbed liner, very durable stuff. Looks good to (Not lumpy) Has the evenness of 150grit sandpaper.
Mmm - keep in mind that is just the gearing in the shaft-axles. There is more in the drive train - namely the two speed transfer case and the transmission.
Final engine to tire rotation has more going on than just the ring & pinion. So vehicle to vehicle based on only the pumpkins is going to result in apples to oranges.

If you're REALLY interested - I recall that there is a thread here about final drive ratios engine to road accounting for different tires, gears, the transfer case, all four transmission gears and with & without the torque converter. It had to do with someone wanting to go on a trail ride, but the Jeep guy in charge of it insisted on all vehicles having a 90:1 final ratio or some such thing. Maybe someone else will remember enough of that one to search and find it - or you could give it a shot.
