Hi Danny
Just viewed your engine running video.
Sounds just the same as Bambi.
What RPM are you idling at ?
Mine likes 780 to 800 rpm at bit fast according to the book but it seems very happy at that speed with very little vibration.
I had big plans this week end but struck down with Gout so rather than drive the forty I have to be content just to sit and have a butchers hook at my project.
Such is life.
Cheers old mate.

Hi Peter,

Sorry to hear you had to cancel your plans... I know you were both looking forward to your outing.. Instead, it sounds like you're in for a wet weekend... At least your butcher's hook is shared with your cheese and kisses... Stay off your feet and don't turn it into a dog's breakfast!!

I have a small tach, with 200 rpm increments... 44 looked to be idling at about 850-950, when I brought her home. I adjusted her down to 650-700, as best I can tell... She purrs like a kitten pissin' on a mirror!!

It'd blow a dog off its chain here today, but doesn't matter... I can barely walk today... I'm jack of this hip/leg pain!!

44 still has a very slight leak from the front of the oil pan, so I dropped her off again, on the way to the doctor yesterday. I can barely push the clutch right now, so I told them to take their time and get it right.

The weather is finally cooling, so I need to get my hip/leg fixed!!

I have a couple of 44 related projects I can work in while sitting, without 44 here... So, I may tackle them this weekend.

Did you see my reply to our conversation about the H55F?

Cheers old mate!!

Hi Danny
Had to change trucks myself today.
A gout knee does not make for good clutch pushing.
The Nissan is auto.
Gear box news . I will make contact over the week end.
I will let you know the outcome.
Chair ridden today myself just . Just wish I could unbolt the worn out bits and replace just like the Forty Series.
Your Aussie slang is coming along well.
You should get the Aussie Slang users guild some time this week.
Can hardly wait on new Australian / American talk Coming our way.
Bambi.
I don't know why mine won't idle smooth at 650 but I can live with that.
The faster speed helps the Aircon . I don't think I told you how good that works.
The inside of the forty can now be like a freezer room. I have owned many cars and trucks with Aircon but none matches up with this set up.
30 deg day and we are freezing with the thermo state on half.
At that setting the pump runs for 3 min and off for 4 min

Sit back and relax today and take it easy.
Got to get your strength and mine up for the Gunbarrel crossing.
The Suzuki is ready to go.
We all have to have a goal.
Cheers Peter

Hi Peter,

Hope your gout is subsiding...

Since you are chair-ridden, read through THIS THREAD ... It has a lot of suggestions that may apply to your "won't purr like a cat pissin' on a mirror" at 650 RPM complaint.

I'm looking forward to that book! Can't wait to show off for my ball and strife!!

I'm not sure Gunbarrel will prove challenging for us... Especially if Tom (@lostmarbles) comes along... We may need to break our own road...

My first goal is to be able to walk my dogs again... Then drive 44... Then hike with my dogs... Then, Maybe Gunbarrel...

Cheers!

Hi Danny
Still chair bound. What a waste of a day.
Can't say I have ever seen a cat pissin on a mirror. Must be a USA thing .
OR
No cats here Brandi makes sure of that.
I will study that thread today.
When I say mine won't idle 650 rpm that's not quite true. At 650 rpm it will idle but if you put a glass of water on the valve cover the water has movement not a lot but it's there. Sitting behind the wheel you can feel the motor at idle.
However
If you increase the rpm to 780 / 800 it's like your cat doing a wee wee on your mirror and the glass of water is like a mill pond.
It's possible this could be a motor mechanical vibration.
I had problems with the motor machine shop . I asked to be present when the motor was balanced but the machine shop conveniently forgot to phone.

Got to get better to walk them dogs . Most important.
I know Tom is watching on the side .
Now you and Tom in the Suzuki . That would be a site.

Air con
The under dash Air conditioner
I brought the under dash unit from Ebay and the condenser was matched to the under dash unit and brought from a high class radiator shop.
The compressor a new OEM unit I found in Spain.
I fitted all the parts and had a shop do the pipe work.
If you want to turn the cab into an ice box Nat found out by accident leaving the glove box door open redirects the cold air to the floor.
Works a treat

Cheers and all the best yo the cheese and kisses.
Peter

What a dog's breakfast!! I got the cat pissin from an Aussie slang website... But, I used the wrong context... Supposed to be smooth... E.g. A bloke who primps and is like a cat pissin' on a mirror... Smooooooth...

Sorry, I just googled "pissin' on a mirror" and only found USA references to porn... What is it about Aussie slang that makes me send penis and porn references to you?!?

I only drink ice tea, so I never put a glass of water on the valve cover  but, I'll bet mine vibrates as much as yours.

With Tom and I in the Suzuki, he could drive from the right seat and I could drive from the left seat.. Just add pedals and a steering wheel to the other side... No need to connect anything... It would just be a placebo... It would allow us to race each other and guarantee a draw.

Cheers!

So, now that my back is finally feeling normal again, I can finally drive 44 with her rebuilt heart... Now, I find the power steering is manual steering...

I was gonna take Gunner on an outing, but the NV mountains are now cold. While waiting for the weather to warm slightly, I've decided to do a few things to 44 before I take her out... So, Gunner and I are taking Chester, in the Tundra tomorrow, for a day trip to see how badly the roads in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge were damaged in the heavy rains a couple of weeks ago.

Technically, I had to put several things on hold until I was physically able. So, this afternoon, I drained the power steering and removed the pump for the rebuild... Waiting on the rebuild kit.

My snorkel arrived a few weeks ago, I'm hoping to get it installed as well as raise the breathers for the axles, TC and tranny shift tower... But it's not my first task.

When I bought my winch, I bought a hitch-mount cradle with the intent of sharing it between 44 and my Tundra... But, now I'm afraid to lift it... Don't want to chance hurting my back further. So, I'm going to mount it on 44's front bumper.

I bought some of Alex's (@SouthBostonFJ40 ) brass bushings and want to get them installed on my hinges.

I was able to sit down and wire lights and license plate lights onto my hitch carrier while I was down for the count... Now, I'm wiring 44 to accept the carrier's plug (I wired the carrier (4 wires) into a 7-pin plug so I can share the carrier on any vehicle with a 7-pin), but wiring products forgot to ship my 3-2 wire converter... So, I'm stuck waiting for that now... Should be here tomorrow.

Also, need to get 44 organized for trips again... I stripped everything out of her before taking her in for open heart surgery.

Should have most of these tasks done before the rebuild kit arrives... I hope.

Danny I'd use a hydraulic jack for lifting the winch without hurting your back. Just my two cents.

The cradle has handles, so Dianna and I can easily get it up onto the bumper (90 lbs) and I can remove the cradle and do the rest. But, I get your point :worms:

That works. Did you ever post a pic of your new winch? I don't recall ever seeing one.

I don't recall... It's an HF Badlands 9000. Probably a waste to carry in many of the places I go... Nothing to anchor to and ground too hard for a Pull-pal. I'm gonna come up with something... Maybe a VBFH and 3 or 4 lengths of 5/8" rebar, with pencil points. Drive them inline, at the same angle, about 2' apart and link them with a good strap and winch the strap.

Could also use a t-bar driver... May be able to pull them afterwards with my hi-lift hack.

I don't anticipate needing it... But, who does?

I'll snap a pic when it's installed.

So... Gunner and I took the Tundra and carried Chester out about 30 miles into the Desert National Wildlife Refuge today. We parked, shared a breakfast burrito and then i had them pose for a picture - oh hell! Chester's gone again!!

Boys G.JPG

I'm having trouble getting Chester to stay put, when off leash, and come back when he runs off. Last week, I took him shooting... he hit everything he aimed at, but ran off one time too many! So, I got in the truck and drove off... about a mile... and waited for him around a blind curve. I was a little worried about rattlesnakes, but really didn't think he would hurt them.

So, today, after he ran off twice, I enticed him back with some pot-laced cookies and lassoed his ass!! Then I leashed him to Gunner and asked Gunner to teach him to behave. Gunner started off by making him 'stay'

Boys tethered1.JPG

Then, Chester started carrying weapons and Gunner's attitude slowly changed

Boys tethered3.JPG

Next thing I knew, Chester was leading a dejected Gunner around

Boys tethered2.JPG

Then, I posed them for another picture and they BOTH ran off!!

Boys on Morman Well.JPG

We had a great time though and I actually hiked (with them of course) one mile uphill 400' and then another mile back to truck... again, 400' uphill. First time I've been able to hike in over 7 months!! It was a great day!!

Technically... my 3-wire to 2-wire adapter finally arrived... I can finish wiring 44 for the hitch carrier tomorrow!

I wired mine with a diode protected converter , it has it's own powered lead and provides the outputs for run/turn/brake for the trailer . I also set it up with a dual plug to give the option of full powered 4-wire or 7-wire to have a powered center 12v output , brakes w/controller and reverse lights . My 6.5x12 utility trailer has full brakes , aux power and reverse lamps - works great when loaded at totals just over 3,000lbs behind the Cruiser or the Taco . Oddly enough , the Cruiser handles it better overall . Need to install the backup camera I took off the Taco (it's gonna get traded off) on the Cruiser - just not sure where to mount that huge monitor screen , need an overhead console . I hate all the extra wiring in the 40 , but almost every bit is hidden and ran off an aux fuse box mounted under the glove box on the passenger side .

I've just read your whole thread, I'm having trouble sleeping lately.
What a journey, long may it continue :)
The only thing I can add is a pic of some interesting Kiwi cloud formations ;)
Apparently there is a pirate in there, I just took the picture as I liked the clouds!

I see him ... Just right of center, in the top third!

Great catch!! Great clouds!!

Danny I love those, your, boys!
But stop feeding their bad ganja habit.

I'll post a picture once I get my winch mounted on the bumper... But, here it is in the hitch receiver cradle

image.jpeg

I didn't intend to buy a winch, but Harbor Freight practically paid me to take it (no snide remarks please)... So, I bought the cradle to allow me to move it, front to rear and 44 to Tundra.mbut, now, I'm afraid it use it portably... So, I'm mounting it on 44's front bumper. Now, I just have to come up with an anchor system that will penetrate solid rock...

I finished wiring 44 for my hitch carrier... Best picture I can get with only two feet behind it.

image.jpeg

I also removed and stripped down my power steering pump, in preparation for rebuilding it.
