Which one? I had one from a volvo 740 for several years on mine...I removed it when I redid my turbo set-up though. Did not notice a huge difference...but then I probably could have been running more boost...

I had a 740 one also, never used it though. It had clearance problems with the rad.
I didn't feel like trying to modify the plastic IC tank.

Interested to see what you came up with Spence.

Keep the updates and pics coming.

My grand national eats that Mr. Gasket turbo paper you've got in your picture like candy! And yes, I realize my 30lb GN and your FJ are totally different animals, but which flanges are you planning to use it on? Also , on a separate note, Pontiac Solstice & Saturn Sky intercoolers are a very nice fit for 80s, they will prolly also work well on others if anybody gets a shot to snatch one up

I just did a quick Google search, definitly a 740 intercooler. I can make it work without modifying the endtanks. If I can turn the batteries 90 degrees, I can run charge piping on each side of the radiator.*

Yeah the 740 worked because I placed it upside down and then just hacked all the rust off the front clip so that I could run the pipes through. Interested to see what you do Spence...On the new truck I don't have rust I can knock off though so things need to be thought out a bit more!

I plan on using the gasket material for the oil feed and drain on the turbo, that's it. Where are you seeing problems with the material?

Dont worry about that. If the flanges are straight and true, a bit of "Hi Temp" gasket goop will do just fine. At least mine has been happy that way for a long time.

That metal 4-bolt gasket looks great too, although I've never used one myself.

It'll work great for that! i used it on two different exhaust manifold crossover flanges located approx. 8 & 35 inches away from the turbo respectfully. They went from original to extra crispy within hours

For exhaust flanges I use Mr Gasket - exhaust gasket paper. Its specifically designed for exhaust and is pretty cheap. I think I paid 20$ for a 1ft by 2 ft sheet. Tin snips to cut out what you want and some hollow punches for the bolt holes. Die grind out the center (wear a mask) and your good to go. Ive never had one fail.

I just redid my exhaust on the 80 with 3" SS.

I decided to go with v-groove clamps and flanges after reading wayne's troopie build. Im not sure if this would work for you but I'd do it again.

All the old flanges leaked, or the bolts were seized/busted off when I tried to take them apart. Alberta winter roads take their toll on our trucks.

Yea, a photo or two would be great. Alberta winters are tough on our trucks, and so is the acid in the mud. Every badge and part numbers have been wiped clean from the engine bay. I'll definitly be running stainless for the intercooler piping, if I had the time to source I'd run a stainless downpipe as well. How well does stainless mig? All I have is a millermatic 212, I would obviously need the appropriate wire and gas. I've also got a Spoolmate for aluminum, but I have yet to use it.

You wont need the spoolmate for SS.

It doesnt mig great, it wants to burn through way easier than steel, a 120v mig should be fine.

I found I had the mig (220v thermal dynamics fabricator 190) temp down low, but had a better bead if I got the metal right to the point where it was about to burn through.

100% argon and stainless mig wire is all you need.

Either take your time and cope with some boogedy welds, or take the time to grind things flush...

Its fun working with a different (and shiny!) metal though, kinda like a different canvas.

I wasn't referring to using the spoolmate for stainless, I was just stating I had it, but have never dealt with aluminum piping. That's what I was told too, argon and stainless wire. I'll grind ugly welds, but I need to to seal; do not want boost leak.

Anyone know the best way to upload a photo from an iPhone to a desktop? It's not showing up in "My Computer", I'm confused how to transfer it to my home desktop. I want to show these intercooler photos!

this things real dirty, im gunna blast it off and post some better ones

gave it a lil bath.

in the last photo you can kinda see the weld seams where Ive ground it down and taken a flap disk to it. Im sure you could polish it up a bit better and make it look better, but it went with SS to avoid corrosion more than cosmetics, so good enough for me.

Not to Hijack or anything but.... Cody: is that an air bag up font I see? Interesting.... Ill have to do some snooping on your builds.

Nice stainless exh.

IMHO i would get someone with a tig to weld IC piping or borrow one, that way it will be 100% pressure proof welds given you know what you're doing and as a bonus no welding of the seams...

ps. I use dropbox in my android phone to transfer pictures to comp, no wires needed and works pretty much anywhere. It should be available for iOs too,,,
