In Washington state, you need the rear mud flaps.

Never heard of a front mud flap requirement before. Is that an Arizona thing? Kind of crazy, considering the general tendency to give the benefit of the doubt to that freedom thing re overbearing gov't regs and the fact it hardly ever rains there....

Arizona is actually one of the easiest to break the rules of the road in. I was just inquiring for product development reasons. Some states have annual
physical inspections. A friend in PA. had his Blazer sidelined because rust had eaten a hole through the metal about an inch inside the wheelwell. there are states that require the front bumper to extend to the outside of the tires or some with bumper height and overall lift laws. A friend in cal got cited for no mud flaps on his Tacoma. Many times it revolves around whether the vehicle in question was sold new with mudflaps. FJ40s never had them, 60s and 80s did

product development :hmm:

:bounce:

OK, was just wondering. I like my front flaps, just seemed odd to have a legal requirement. In fact, I owned what was probably the first 4x4 vehicle in the US market with factory front flaps, the '76 Subaru 4x4 Wagon. Front-wheel drive cars had them before that, IIRC Saab and maybe Audi?

I'm just trying to figure out what most 80 owners would prefer. A slightly longer slider and remove the forward mudflaps or in the case of those with factory steps, removing or trimming the lower plastic. On rear bumpers, remove the mud flap and extend the 1/4 protection or limit the 1/4 protection and retain the flaps?

Here's my 10 cents.....leave the flaps on the rear and add some 1/4 panel protection at the same time. This would be the best of both worlds and would fill a much needed niche in the 80 rear bumper arena. I dig the "look" of the flaps on the 80s.
