Gosh. I've never heard of that brand before! I know riders really love their Titus bikes.

lol. I reread my post and it looks like I'm saying on-one are awesome bikes. I meant to praise the Titus. I never heard of on-one before the Titus sale.

i wonder how much of the cost of a frame is the cost of warranting it.

i wonder how much of the cost of a frame is the cost of warranting it.

That's a good question and I don't know the answer, but it seems as if the manufacturers can keep the number low with a 1 year warranty. When you think about it, most riders just toodle along the trails during the good season--say 4 months on weekends. That's really not a lot of wear and tear on the frame.

Another way to keep the warranty reserve number low is to just build a good frame! Rocky Mountain gives the original owner a 5 year frame warranty, and I think Specialized is now at 10 years no matter the owner!

I ride a lot and I ride fast through rocky, rooty terrain. Both front and rear triangle became cracked and were replaced no questions asked. The new frame pieces were radically redesigned, so it seems Rocky Mountain really does r&d most likely due to "in the field" busted frames.

I have two years left on the warranty, but I don't know if RM will replace the front and rear triangles multiple times.

I've been in the bicycle business since 83. I am sick of bicycle warranties. 1 year should be it. "I just went off of a curb and the frame broke". Really why does your rear wheel look like and egg. Manufactures have to figure in a little cost for warranty because of stupid s***s that were "just riding along".

Do you work at a dealer/shop or manufacturer? The local bike shop at least gets to bill for labor for swapping parts from old to new frame. That's always a good time to upgrade some components, too.

It's like a win no matter what for the local bike shop.

The blur and the RacerX looked very similar. The Horst-link is awesome -- I like it on the Specialized too -- but I have no experience with vpp. The DM on the ibis mojo is the best XC suspension I've ever ridden, 5.5" travel. Maybe it was just the whole package though...

$600 is Redline budget.. Either a Monocog 29er or d440. I've owned both and they are possibly the best value in MTB. Currently ride a Monocog Flight 29er.. and you can probably find one of those used for within your budget if you are patient.

those in the know....

....ride a mojo!

Here's my new Mojo HD.
This snapshot was taken right before it's inaugural ride down the Glade on Mt Hood.

Could pick up something used off of Craigslist or the like and upgrade a few parts and ride until it breaks or gets stolen. Picked up a Giant NRS1 XC bike for $600, picked up a larger NRS frame and sold the old frame and upgraded to a Marzochi lock-out front shock that was on clearance. Just recently upgraded tires to Panaracers, upgraded bars to Monkey and used Oury-lock grips. I think everything else is stock but have been thinking about a Cloud-9 rear shock but after re-sealing the Rock-shox it's holding up well...

The rear suspension isn't that great of a design and some people have had frame cracking issues after having a spill but I haven't had any problems. Ideally the best bike would be one that you build up to suit you and your riding style. A couple of online places have closeouts and clearance sells of the older components to make room for the "NEW" stuff so some savings can be had.

You can find an SE stout dirt cheap right now. Disk breaks 29inch wheels, rigid ss, tight geometry and solid.

In the two years that i have had this 400.oo bike it has been my "go to" ride. I have a Specialzed Pitch 6" freeride/trail bike, a Kona Jake CX bike and a IF deluxe hartail and none of them are as much fun (or as cheap) as my SE.

sorry for the off topick comment.

Full suspensions are good but I don't like the way they ride. Sun and Ski has a pretty good sale going on right now. The Marin Hawk Hill is regular 900 bux and on sell now for 599. not too bad.
imho

i bought a diamond back, $500, hard tail and disk brakes, its a decent bike. Its not the Gary Fisher at my Parents house but its a nice bike still

I would check craigslist every day. I did that for a little over a month and ended up getting a Giant Revel 0 for $300. It had a couple rides on it and had maybe one scuff and bad rear tube in the tire. It has been a decent first mtb for me. The only thing that I dislike is its near 35lb weight with a large frame.

These are some of the best welds in the industry. Awesome tubing too. Made in the USA.

Titus Racer-X, same frame that I ride.

Any riding is better than not riding.

WHOA! How did that happen? I have a 2007 Titus Motolite that my son now rides. The bike is solid, has never given me trouble, and for it to break at that point so catastrophically...... I love the Titus. It's a great bike. The guy that designed it started Pivot bikes and they are very nice, with a very nice price tag also.

I now ride a Trek Remedy 8 and so far (3 rides) it rips. The Trek has a lifetime warranty on the frame. I think my Titus did also but do not know now with the new ownership.

Yeah that is a pretty catastrophic failure, almost like he went over a massive jump and landed 85% weight on the front wheel (hope he is ok from the crash!)!

My brother has a carbon racer X and loves the thing. I have my On-One Steel Inbred 29er (now the parent company of Titus) and my brother just bought a carbon Whippet frame that is almost spot on geometry wise. He says that the whippet is probably the fastest bike he has ridden.
