I am currently running 33-10.5 mts on my 60 but with gas prices nearing $4 a gallon I am now trying everything to get better mileage. It did make a difference going from 12.5 to the 10.5s but I was wondering if anyone had any info on how much of a difference the swap to ATs would make?

I don't know but if someone does please post up. I'm running 31x10.5 right now and I'm about to go to 33x9.5 but I'd like to know the difference between MT's and AT's for mileage and life of the tire. Obviously the AT is better on both accounts but how much better?
I'll be regearing to 4:11's to get back to the stock ratios and I'll be putting in a front limited slip when I do that for offroadability.

While a narrower tire will have less rolling resistance...as will a less agressive tire...I hardly think that the MPG gain would out weigh the cost of another set of tire.

Years ago I decided to not care how much gas cost. The sooner you think that way...the less you think about tires.
If you wanted good mileage..probably should bought a yugo....but that ain'tgonna happen is it :D

It would be interesting to know the exact difference, of course, that will require that you specify which brand AT.

I would guess that at MOST you'll get a couple % better mileage from an AT vs. MT.

Let's say, instead of 20mpg on the MT, you might get *maybe* 21.

If you drive *a lot*... that 5% may eventually add up to the $400 it'll cost to get 4 new tires. How long does it take you to spend $8,000 on fuel? Even at $4/gallon, that's about 100 fillups, right? Do you empty and fill the tank twice per week?

Maybe a better solution would be to get tall and skinny street tires. They'll cost less and get you even better mileage, then when you go wheeling, put the MT's back on.

To what I understand it has more to do with the weight and profile of the tyres than it does the tread pattern (from my old days). A 9" tyre will create less drag than a 12" (same goes for the opposite sex):whoops: .
Ive used BFG MT's and consistantly get about 50k-55k miles out of a set whereas several buddies squeeze 50k barely. Happy with 10.5" though.

What brand / type limited slip....only one I know about is the Auburn unit?

I went from a 33X9.50 AT to a 33X10.50 MT and it reduced my milage by 1.5 - 2 mpg hwy. No change in town.

hey cruiser guy i have 295/75R16 BFG AT for daily driving and a set of 33x10.5 r15 for the mud (BFG MT) and with a stock 3B their is a huge difference with the MT's, 5gear is almost useless but with the AT's drive drives alot nicer and better on feul about 50-100kms more to a tank in my experiance

MPG

From my experience with the tranny issue you tend to get better milage out of the MT's on the highway. in town the difference is about the same. If you do a lot of highway driving or love to romp on it then MT is the way to go. If you just Cruise then the auto is the choice for you.

I searched and searched but could never find anything but anecdotal data for this change. It would be really interesting to actually have someone measure drag between different tires using equipment to do it. The problem with driving is that really, each drive is different no matter how careful you are.

my guess is that the MT's will have more drag as the outer lugs and tread voids are larger than the AT. But this is a pretty small difference in gains, bigger gains can be found through switching to propane. And if that doesnt work get yourself a metro or firefly or festiva. They are made for fuel economy.

got any links or info... did not know there was such an anmial for FJ60?

This is one of the many things offered in other markets. You NEED a full floater to use this, that's why it's going in the front axle since the front is essentially a full floater axle.

There is a guy on Ebay who has them occasionally. Spector probably has them too.

I'll post up when I do the install.

Old rule of thumb, but very untrue these days...fortunately autos have gotten better!
Unfortunately, he's talkin tyres.
