Enjoying the California sun. Took the 200 out the last four weekends on various camping adventures.

A few recent small things. Picked up the iKamper with LineX finish. So far, so good. I was a little hesitant to lose the storage space, but so far it’s working out well. Most of our trips are one to three nights, so not tons of gear.

Swapped out the orange MaxTraxx for some black ones. Picked up a few new Fenix lights, and a Stahl fire pit after reading the good reviews from Overland Journal.

Other than that, we’ve added a golden doodle to our family and excited for her to join us soon once she is fully vaccinated.

Best looking 200 on Mud! Nice pics!

Echo'ing a lot of the previous comments, love the build. We just did Yosemite -> Ben Ries -> Big Sur breaking in our new to us LX and had a great time with our mini-goldendoodle pup. Your Mendocino trip looked awesome, hope to get out of SoCal again and make it that far up. How're the Ridge Grapplers with some miles on them? Really considering going that route. Cheers 👍

thanks for helping me figure out the source of that squeak in the aux tank and popping in the washers!

Can you tell me about this noise/fix? I have some funky noises coming from my 24

@mrburlingame !! Good to see you again on MUD. We need to meet up as discussed. I’ve been passing through your neighborhood before the SIP, but keep forgetting to give you a ring. Again sweet photos! Talk soon.

I met the iKamper folks at OE and they seemed to be quality people.

One of the reasons that we have not considered an RTT is because our Vizsla is 65-70 pounds and incredibly protective of the kids. None of us would get any sleep if he couldn’t sleep with them. He’d go crazy worrying about them.

I know some folks with small dogs take them up in the tent. I guess that works if they are small enough and don’t need to go out in the middle of the night. I can imagine myself carrying a dog down a ladder in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night, and after a beer or two ;)

Whatever you plan to do, I think I’d start straight off with that. You may consider crating in the truck, and then as she gets older you could eliminate the crate. Honestly, I’d think a golden doodle could be trained to sleep just about anywhere, but probably not suitable for leaving alone out under the stars. If you start her out in the tent, it may be hard to change that expectation later on, though.

We are thinking about an off-road teardrop trailer as another solution. The kids and dog can sleep in the teardrop and we could sleep in an iKamper mounted on top of the trailer. It’s probably not a suitable solution for all of our trips, but would be good for most of them anyways.

Sage advice @1world1love. I think a crate in the back seat will be the way to go then while she's a puppy. Don't want to have to deal with the ladder when she's bigger and probably not a good habit to form.

What kind of teardrop were you looking at? That would be a cool setup, particularly for family trips with minimal rough terrain.

Thank you. Had to look up Ben Ries as I was not familiar with the name, and pleasantly surprised to see it's right in Butano State Park. So close to us. Probably need to make a reservation to camp there pretty far in advance I'd imagine. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've been very happy with the Ridge Grapplers. Have KO2s on my 80 and those have been good too. Hard to compare since the vehicles are so different, but after initially reading about @mcgaskins, @indycole and others on Mud finding them to be a good tire I went that route.

@benc at Dissent helped add some spacers or washers between the frame and tank which mostly helped. Still hearing a little though.

I would love that @civil offroad. Let me know when you are going to be in the area and we can meet up.

We have looked at quite a few (Timberleaf, Escapade, SoCal, etc). Honestly, they all are about the same as far as construction and price and are all very nice. We really like the newest trailer from Patriot, which although not a teardrop, would probably suit us pretty well. It sleeps 4+ and has steps instead of a ladder.

The problem is that we just can't justify paying 50k for a trailer that we may use 10 times a year, or even 30k for that matter. We would probably pay 20k as long as it met all of our requirements. We were really impressed with the Hiker trailers. You can get one pretty well optioned for <20k which seems a pretty reasonable investment. People seem to love them and I've talked to them a few times and they seem really great to work with.

I'd really like to find something that can run the same wheel/tire combo that I am running. So far, only Patriot seems to offer the 5x150 lug pattern as stock. Other places "say" they can do it, but nobody will commit to a price.

I am not a fan of the long lead times that most of these shops have. I like it that Patriot stocks trailers at their US distributor. I want to be able to physically see and touch the exact trailer that I am buying. Our plan was to go to OE West this year and come home with a trailer as the vendors are usually keen to unload whatever they brought with them rather than haul it back. Alas, OE was cancelled, so....

We are still looking though.

I have been very happy with both my Kimberley's I have owned. I also have camped alot more since owning.

Kimberley are built like a LC.

Yeah, the Karavan is really interesting, but it is too heavy for my purposes and I am not a fan of having the galley inside. I am looking for the equivalent of a hard sided tent on 34" wheels. A Dry weight 1200-1500 lbs would be perfect.

Not sure if it is sturdy enough, but I think the Forest River NoBo 10.6 meets those requirements.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these trailers. Much appreciated. Makes sense given how pricey these are; you really need to get quite a bit of use out of them for the numbers to make sense.

Bummer not possible about OE West this year...I've been dying to go and had a ticket for last year but had a conflicting obligation at the same time so was unable to go. Really hope it happens next year, but regardless, I'm sure it will be a huge event once it opens back up again.

Hi all, unrelated to my build here, but selling my 80 Series. Time for it to find a new home where it can be loved and enjoyed often. Please pass along if you know anyone who may be looking.

Let me clarify, I’m looking forward to meeting other like minded people so let the group know if there are days we can all meet up

Had a chance to finally get out on a couple trips the last few months which was incredible, as I'm sure many of you have two. In early April we visited Death Valley with a few friends. Two 80s and a Tundra. It was beautiful and the weather topped out in the mid 90s, which apparently is chilly compared to the 130+ that's happening there this week. Special thanks to my friend Ian Tuttle who mapped out the trip for us on the best places to go for a beginner's trip. When he told me he's been to DV over 50 times and not yet seen the whole park, I knew I was in for a treat. Hard to fully appreciate how big the park is until you're there.

After I got home, I read in the news about a couple in their late 20s who broke down in the park, and one of them sadly passed away. While we were in the park, a couple miles from a main road on a dirt trail, saw a newish Audi Q7 on the side of the road with a spare in progress of being mounted but no one nearby. Another time, while cruising down another trail in a remote part of the park, came across a large motorcycle pack in the middle of the road. We opened it up and found it full of supplies and figured it must have bounced off the back of someone's bike and they kept riding for a while and couldn't find it. We left it close to where we found it in a visible spot so if the rider returned they could easily find it. Hopefully they had a lot of water with them in their other pack. It's no joke out there - be prepared folks. Glad we had plenty of supplies, water, an InReach Mini, and Iridium sat phone.

On a positive note, below are some photos from our trip.

In May, did a quick overnight with three friends to Wildcat at Pt Reyes National Seashore, one of my favorite spots. Not technically a trip in the 200 but what the heck, this thread is all about exploration and having a good time in nature. Thanks to Ian for these fun photos.
